How can I tell when a discoid lupus skin lesion is healed?

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum and I would like to thank everyone for sharing. I have come across lots of useful information. Thanks again!

I have a quick question though; I was diagnosed with discoid lupus some months and I have some skin lesions which I have been applying triamcinolone cream judiciously. The reddness that circumscribed the lesion is all cleared but there is a hyperpigmented and atrophic area left. At what point is the lesion healed? Should I expect the dark patch will get cleared eventually with continuous application? Will the area appear as my skin once looked?

i am wondering about similar issues. i just started getting a new kind of skin rash this past summer, and they've not gone away yet. i've not yet been diagnosed with discoid lupus, but that what it looks like. and i'm treating it as such, with topical steroids and an increase in plaquenil.

do you notice that the spots do start to fade, only to be replaced by new ones? and do you notice yours starting to fade as you become more relaxed and less stressed? mine do heal and eventually fade, and i notice that they do also seem more subdued the more sleep, and the less stressed out i am. i went on a one-month smoking relapse (i really haven't smoked for years - but just had a bit of a meltdown in that area), and i noticed the rash got worse during this time. it's much better now. i'm trying to stay away from coffee now, too, and i notice an improvement already. things are quieting down, the less stressed i am.

at least it's winter now, so i have an excuse to wear a scarf over my neck! i'm worried that this won't clear up by spring. i'm a teacher, and don't need to hear, "oooh, townsend's got a hickie!!!" about the spots on my neck. even though 95% of the kids are way to polite for that nonsense, there's always that one kid who doesn't know better. you know, the same one who asks adults if they're pregnant and how old they are.

Prednisone sometimes promotes facial hair growth. I had an 8-year-old ask why I had a mustache (very blond, mind you). His parents were standing right there and said nothing to admonish him. There was an awkward silence where it seemed that everyone was holding their breath. I finally asked him why he didn't have a mustache!

Hey Townsend,

 thanks for getting back to me. I have actually not noticed any changes in the rash in relation to stress but I do remember noticing the 1st rash a couple of days after some exposure to direct sunlight.

And yeah, the rash is fading some but it seams like it is taking forever to clear!

Hi tsmall, I have discoid, have just healed from a two year battle with it. i had it on my face, head, arms, and chest. I wondered the same thing. Mine are still scarred. My arms have the sunk in areas where the centers were. They are now white. My arms are looking more normal and i'm feeling much better. So yes, there is hope. lol. depending on how bad yours is they should go back to normal or semi normal. I did have to hide my arms and neck becausse they looked soo bad and i don't have to do that anymore. Thank the Lord. I hope you have a quick recovery. God Bless you!

Sonyalee - I was looking at your post and you seem to have a lot of the same diagnoses and meds that I do. I wonder if you can advise me - I'm having an outbreak of these skin rashes all over my back, chest, arms and neck. It's creeping up towards my face. Do you have any suggestions for how to slow it down? I keep thinking that sleep and de-stressing helps, but I wonder if I am just imagining this. The reality is, it seems to be running its own course. Did you notice any improvements with increased dosages of meds? What dosages do you take of plaquenil, for example?
