Hey Forum, it has been ages since Ive posted but I check in from time to time. I havd had lupus for over 10 ys now and as we know it can be horrible at times. Over the past 3 yrs I have been having a problem with night sweating. Just this past week I have been waken with a soaked gown as well as pillows in my bed. This has included a headache this morning and im literally feeling like im about to be sick. Back track In 2008 a year after I had my baby I was concerned and had a full blood testing including my hormones and everything came up negative. I get tested yearly for HIV and no problems there, so I was wondering does anyone go through this problem as well. I am 36 yrs old and not menopausing but im also not sure if it can be lupus related. This sweating is really getting ridiculous.

Since 2008 was a while ago, it wouldn't hurt to get your hormones checked again and maybe do a full workup with the endocrinologist. Thyroid issues can accompany lupus and other AI diseases.

Also our autonomic systems can get messed up as well and there are certain conditions that are linked to it. Our autonomic system controls our body temperature among other things. I would definitely at the very least bring this up to your rheumy and see if there is any connection.

After 2-3 years with Lupus, I had a period of 1-2 years with the horrid night sweats like you describe. My rheumy never really addressed them directly, and I don't recall having any thyroid tests (certainly didn't see an endocrinologist) -- the night sweats did seem to slowly go away once I was on Cellcept (for my cognitive dysfunction).

Have now been off the Cellcept for over 3 years and very seldom get the night sweats anymore - like maybe only every 8 to 10 months. I think that when I get too tired I sleep so soundly that when I get hot in the night I don't move around enough to get the covers off of me and that has something to do with it.

Meanwhile, I feel your pain. It's bad enough to have to wake up that way, but having to change clothing - or even having to change sheets -- is a horrid reason to be awake in the middle of the night!

Thank you ladies for your response, I made an appointment to see my doctor today because the nausea or headache hasnt left not to mention, Ive been sick with Pleurisy for the past two months and was on two sets of antibiotics. I want to chalk it up to a great big flare but I want to be sure. I will also mention Cellcept to my doctor to see if thats an option.

Cellcept is used for anti-rejection in kidney transplants. It wouldn't be used just to treat night sweats, it's too heavy duty for that. I was taking it as my brain had turned to mush, and it seemed to handle the sweating as a side effect. Not sure if some of the night sweating wasn't from lupus fevers.

Usually the drugs are tried in this order Prednisone, Imuran, Cellcept, MTX...with some variation in order between doctors.

I get nightsweats sometimes -- but it is hard enough to sleep too. Do you also have trouble sleeping at night? If so, it may have to do with your circadian rhythm/pineal gland, etc... as stated in one of the earlier posts... I have trouble with these things at times but know that I have a pituitary tumor (master gland of body) that also affects these various hormonal responses/actions, etc.. I think the advice to get an endocrinologist involved is important for you, because these "small" things are often big indicators of larger underlying issues.

I found that I had my tumor because I started lactating when I was not pregnant nor had ever been pregnant (1997). The doctor ran some tests and saw an elevated prolactin level but neg pregnancy blood serum which put him on the track of running the first MRI and finding it. Who would have thought that "milk" would have anything to do with a brain tumor?! I would get checked out--and don't mean to scare you with my story either... that is obviously not the norm either what I experienced. Best of luck! Nicki

Hey all, thanks for responding to my post. I went to the doctor they gave me a TB test to rule that out plus full blood work....everything was fine even my hormones....I havent been sweating lately but will regret when that time comes again...Ive been conscious of the blankets I use when im sleeping and that seems to help.

Its always something with this lupus thing..Hope everyone is well! Until next time...
