The Road of Chronic Illness
The other day my doctor started me on the road of chronic
illness. The road is plagued with many dangers and uncertainties. It's not a
smooth road. As I walk along I find there are sticks to trip me and rocks to
cause me to stumble. At times the path twist and turn so much that I'm not sure
which way I'm going. They are no compasses to help me know the direction I'm
going. Occasionally I'll see a sign pointing saying “go this way”. Sometimes
I'll see a sign that says you are here but it doesn't say where here is.
There are times the road is covered with thick brambles and
underground. There are places where the road becomes narrow and almost
nonexistent. There are dangerous drop-offs and great chasms to cross. Sometimes
I even see a robber on the road threatening to take something precious from me.
The road rises and falls as I travel. I feel like the road is never ending as I
trudge along. The road feels lonely.
But wait, as I looked over to the side I see someone walking
next to me. It's my friend. I smiled at her. She motions for me to look behind
me. I turn, look and see all my wonderful friends and family. They are there to
help me up when I fall. They lend a helping hand in building bridges to cross
the chasms. They are there for me to cling to when I feel I can't go on. I find
the road not quite as hard with my friends and family right beside me.
