Anyone have to take an antimalarial while on Plaquenil?

I'm travelling to Central America in May for my honeymoon, and my doctor just informed me I need to take a separate antimalarial while I'm there (I believe Malarone is what she called it). She said Plaquenil would only work for malaria prevention if I was going to Africa. Either way, I'm reading about some pretty serious side effects from Malarone, not to mention I can't find any reviews from someone who is on Plaquenil too (the reason my Dr picked Malarone is because it apparently does not interfere with Plaquenil like other antimalarials). Anyone have any information on this? Thanks so much for reading!

Hum. I went to Ecuador, Peru, and the Galapagos Islands, Cancun, Grand Cayman, and deep into Mexico and they said the Plaquenil was just fine.

Here in Atlanta, GA the place that knows the most about foreign travel and that issues the drug stamps that accompany the passport is the Public Health Service. I would call and see them rather than trusting my Doctor -- they are in the business of foreign travel and my doctor would know nothing about it.
