I don't know why it took me so long to put it together, but I've been getting Gel Manicures at the nail salon and been getting sick over and over again.

It turns out they cure you with a high powered UV light for a minimum 9 minute exposure per hand (some places just leave the light on for the whole 20 minute manicure).

Avoid Gel Nail polish if you have UV related flare ups, it's a rather potent light!

Please note the dentist uses a halogen light to see in your mouth.

Yes, they cure the top layer with the same UV lamp

Welcome to our forum Roxyblondeana. Not only do I have problems placing my hands under the UV light, but my nail beds can sometimes become inflamed if I polish them myself. Lupies can have decreased blood flow to the tiny veins under the nail bed. I still polish my toes with no problems. It's such a little thing, but I feel pretty when thery're polished. I got sick one time from a UV light at the accupuncturist's office. He left me under a heat lamp for 1/2 hour and I got sicker and sicker the longer I lay there. This from a practioner that said he knew all about Lupus. Now I stay away from those lamps when I go for either Massage Therapy or Accupuncture.

I sat down next to a table lamp at my BIL's and my hand which was in the light started burning and hurting. I moved my hand quickly and looked at the bulb. He had one of those energy savers bulb in it. The kind that looks like a coil. My hand is still hurting but the burning is gone.
