hi. i'm new to this whole forum business.
i was diagnosed in january of this year with lupus but i've had constant joint pain since december first. i just wanted to be ABSOLUTELY sure about what a flare-up is. so is it a period of time when you aren't feeling your usual physical self? or is it when the pain is especially excruciating? just wanted to be one hundred percent on that.

Hello and welcome! I am sorry you are embarking on this wild "lupus" ride. Flares can vary widely. For me, it is like the flu. Joint and muscle pain, extreme fatique, all over body swelling (both external and internal), difficulty thinking clearly, and increased difficulty controlling my social graces (I hurt and want to hide). When these symptoms start, I try very hard to increase my rest, even giving myself some "do nothing" days. Seems to help. Of course if the internal swelling begins to affect my bodily functions it is time to call the doctor. At that point I usually start the dreaded pred. Then I get back to my normal. Good Luck. Flares for me is hurting all over and feeling like I've been hit with a Semi!
I just want to stay in my recliner with my remote during them. I pity anyone who tries to talk to me during it. They sometimes lose their heads or some other body part from me snapping at them.

When I have a flare I just want to crawl into bed and sleep. I feel achy all over, my joints stiffen up and it hurts to even put my feet on the floor when I get out of bed. Sometimes I get so stiff my husband has to help me off the couch. I can't think straight, I get sick to my stomach and run low grade fevers. When they are really bad, it affects my GI tract and I get crazy rashes....worse if I have been in the sun or under florescent lights.

Hello everyone! I get the same flares as you all and have told my rhumey all about it. He scribbles things down in my chart looks up at me and says, "is that right". From day 1 he's never wanted to acknowledge that my ana (1.683) was Lupus, he would say that it could be or i might just be general inflammation. I get the joint pain, the rashes, sores in my mouth, low grade fever, hair loss, you name it! I needed a dx for my supplemental insurance and the nurse said it was chronic inflammation! What the heck? Do i look for another doctor or accept his dx? He has me on plaquinil and prednisone and lyrica for fibromyalgia...so if i dont have lupus then why the meds?

He's giving you the right treatment for autoimmune.
But if you just have to have the diagnosis and he refuses to do it then go to one who will.

Wow that sounds like my rhuemy dr. I've been taking plaquinil, tramdol, and nuerotin for about 4-5 months now, and my last dr apt my doctor took me off all the meds and told me to take over the counter meds which don't work for.

And my ANA speckle is about 10:695. so what am I to do. rolleyes
