No soft drinks - how long for results?

Hi Friends,

Well, for years everyone everyplace has said how much better I'd feel and how much weight I'd loose if I stopped with the soft drinks. I regularly had 1-2 per day, and when in stress I've been known to do 5-6 Dr Peppers a day, with cheese straws and no other food for the day.

Today marks 29 days without sodas. Have had 2 glasses of sweet tea, 2 glasses of wine, and about 10 glasses of lemonade this month; but primarily water. Maybe a couple glasses of cranapple or orange juice.

I'm here to report that nothing has happened. No big cravings for sweets, no caffeine headaches, no difference in how I feel, and no difference in my weight. I'm very disappointed, and am having trouble continuing this soda abstinence.

Anyone had better results? How long did it take?

Stick with it.  Some of the substitute drinks have lots of calories in them too so they still add sugar calories to your diet.  Our bodies are programed to maintain their weight even when reducing calories....just takes time and for some it seems forever.  My wife is one of those.

Have you looked at your overall diet?  Are you eating enough "good" calories?  Particularly important to eat in the morning.  As I said, when you deprive yourself our bodies are programmed genetically to conserve which brings up the paradox that it can be easier to lose weight if you eat rather than deprive (starve) yourself.

I was testing the "quit drinking Coke and everything will be better" line that I keep hearing from some folks. cool

None of that other stuff applies, it would actually invalidate the test. But your comments are all perfectly valid for someone attempting a weight loss regime. turn

Hey Lynn:

Sorry that your experiment isn't proving that you'll "feel better" by giving up Coke. I guess I won't try giving up my drinking of rootbeer. As I'm sure you remember I was a huge Mt. Dew junkie, gave that up, but I still have one from time to time. I try to stick to rootbeer or gatoraide most of the time. I HATE water no matter if I put something in it.

I'm sure my Dr is going to instruct me to drink more water though, as my Kidney function was bad on the last testing. We are watching it as of the moment.

I hope that you won't continue to torture yourself by denying yourself of the coke, IF, it's not making you feel better. It sounds like overall you're doing okay, (am I correct on that?) and I'm sure having one coke a day shouldn't hurt you. It's kinda like have a cup of coffee everyday.

Good luck if you continue your experiment and please let us know how it turns out.

If I were you I would substitute red wine for the soda and chase down dark chocolate with it.

Hey Lynnwood. As you know I'm a soda drinker who lives in ATL where Coke is King, but I'm much worse than you 'cause I drink soda (and eat foods) with artificial sweetener (AS). My daughter (the chef) has voiced her displeasure with this a few times. Finally I said, "Do you want me using AS, or do you want me fat?" Of course I'm fat even with the AS, but I think it would be worse without them.

I don't have the will power you have. I'm very proud of you for exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight. Love Ya, Donna

Butterflake, I perfer A&W or Mug myself. I have to restrict how much I drink though...gives me tummy issues if I drink too much of it.
