My Dr tried Imuran as an immunosuppressant. For me, I never had any side effects. I took it for about 8 months, sorry don't remember the dosage. For me, it never provided any relief from Lupus symptoms - didn't effect my disease at all.
We moved on to Cellcept, which proved to be my miracle drug!
Remember to TELL YOUR DR about any and all supplements or special diets you try. When we don't, we risk having the effects of the supplements confused with the effects of the medications, and it messes with the Dr's plan for studying how we react to the medications.
It's NOT a good idea to take anything that is supposed to "support the immune system". Lupus is already an over-active immune system, it does NOT need support. In fact, the immunosuppresants are there to knock it back down to a normal level. Things that "support the immune system" are doing the OPPOSITE of what the Dr's medications are trying to do.
That said, I do take the supplements recommended by my Drs. For me, that's a multi-vitamin (no iron), Vit D (often low since SLE patients don't tolerate the sun well), Vit B, Fish Oil, and Vit C. All things that measured low in lab tests.
Best wishes,
