Has anyone urinated large amounts of blood periodically?

As I am sure everyone is aware I have been having some kidney issues.  Nothing major; low GFR (stage 3); hematuria and off and on protienuria.  Everything ruled out but kidney disease.  Still waiting for Nephrologist appointment. 

Last night while leaving work, I had severe left kidney pain.  Ignored it, it got better.  20 minutes later I arrived home, sat down and urinated on myself.  I looked and it was a mixture of urine, bright red/pink blood and pus (phlem like) all over.  It smelled like urine.  It came on suddenly and went away just as suddenly.  It didn't happen after that.

I did have this experience about a month ago also.  Kidney swelled you could see my back swollen and severe pain accompanied it.  It came and went the same way as last night.  What I don't understand is that if is the kidneys, why don't I urinate blood all the time?  It was a lot of blood.

It is nothing like my usual monthly cycle which I got over last week.  It did not smell like blood just urine.  It felt like urine coming out, I just couldn't control it.

Has any one experienced this, heard of this or have any logical idea what is going on.  Sorry if I gross anyone out.  I would call the doctor but he blew me off last time I told him this symptom.  I think he thinks I'm making it up.  So I figured I'd wait until I urinated blood on a constant basis.  It doesn't make sense to me either.  Thanks for your input - Kristin

Hi Kristin, wow that don't sound good at all. I wonder if it has somthing to do with your bladder instead of your kidney since you were unable to control your urine. I think I would have grabbed my clothes and ran for the ER with them. That really sounds frightening to me. I would not recommend waiting until the is a contant thing. If your doctor isn't taking this seriously it sounds like you may need to consult a different doctor. Or maybe a specialist in the field.

What you describes sounds scary to me and I can't imagine why your doctor doesn't take you seriously. I'm with Carol and would probably make an appointment to see another doctor who would investigate and try to find out what's wrong.

I agree with the others Kris. I would definitely seek out medical attention ASAP. Blood and pus is never a good sign and since you lost bladder control sounds like more of a serious indication. Please keep us updated.

I have to agree with everyone else - I wouldn't mess around with it. I know things are more complicated because you don't have insurance, but these symptoms sound worrisome. I'm really hoping you go to the ER or get seen ASAP. Please keep us posted on what is happening and what you find out. Take care

You need to go to the ER. You don't want to mess around with your kidneys and bladder. While you may not be feeling the usual symptoms, even if it was simple irritation, urethral polyps or something like that, there is scarring that can occur that can really mess you up. Antibiotics help you heal better, besides you don't want some low grade infection hanging around, becoming antibiotic resistant and really tough to get rid of. Perhaps you aren't feeling the usual symptoms due to some neuropathy or pain medicines you are taking, and so it seems odd what happened. If you are always in UT pain, this should help get your doctors going. The phlegm you saw may be pus due to infection or you may have lost the protective mucus lining in your urinary tract and you'll really get sick and sore for a long time so you need to go. In either case, the docs can get you better. I hope you take care. I know urinary stuff is such a pain and depending on whether you have a sympathetic doctor or not, some just don't get how bad it hurts in so many different ways, the frequency, urgency, back pain, other pain, etc. I'm sorry this has happened and I hope you get to the doc soon and let us know what happened.

Kris, hello. I'm new here, but I did have a very large amount of blood in my urine like 2 saturdays ago. They checked me for UTI, kidney stones and everything at the ER. NOTHING!!! I have went to see a Urologist and he wants to do a Cystoscopy but Im waiting to be cleared by my doctor to have this done, since I have so many things wrong with me. So, the blood when it was there I had NO OTHER symptoms. Not even 1. So, thats about all I can tell you. Good luck with everything and let us know when you find out something.

Thanks everyone. Deevee please let me know how you make out. Sorry to hear you are going through this too. The only symptoms I get are left kidney pain and swelling prior to these events. It goes away and next day the urine is a rust color. I think it is from salt intake. Dr. and I got into an argument about Prednisone. When I asked if they could prescribe it he yelled at me that I was in perfect health and didn't need it. That and it causes stomach ulcers. (I guess that would explain the necessity to see a Nephrologist, because I am perfectly healthy?). I explained my med history and he said I need a shrink. So I got angry and ate tons of salt and protein; since I was in perfect health I no longer needed to limit my diet. Not too bright on my part. Also explains the fizzy urine with floaties in it.

If I do go to the ER then I will just load up on the bad food before I go in so they can get a real show. More bang for the buck I say. Not going down without a fight this time. Wrote to the NJ medcial examiner and the head of Atlanticare where I receive PCP and ER treatment regarding their lack of treatment. This is absurd at this point and I am furious. Time to eats me spinich.

Hopefully I will get a response. Not too sure what to do if I don't. Go global with it I guess. Not real fond of anouncing my life to the public but if it spares me my life, it doesn't sound like I have many other choices. I could sue, but that takes years. I need more immediate help, preferably before the kidney and heart go. Drama, drama, drama. I don't see the necessity of going through this or how it could be cost beneficial to me or to Atlanticare. I'm at wits end, literally.

As usual I could go on and on. So I'll spare everyone. Surprised I still get emotional over this after 10 years. Hope you all have a good day. I think we should all treat ourselves and do something nice for ourselves today. We all get so beat up over this stuff sometimes. Don't know about you, but I need a positive action. Kristen, I am SO upset that you have to go through this - it makes me so angry at our system. I haven't seem Michael Moore's new documentary "Sicko", but I bet it's loaded with stories like yours. How can that doctor even claim that you are healthy - maybe because he can't make any money off of your case. *hippi steps down off of her soapbox now* I really really hope you see the nephrologist soon. Frothy/fizzy urine is a big red flag for proteinurea and blood is never anything to mess around with. Do whatever you need to do to get the care you need. I like your statement about going global. Going to your local tv news or newspaper might not be a bad angle - they are always looking to dig up new dirt and new stories. It might be good timing to approach your local media about your case since "Sicko" is getting a lot of press. Hang in there and take care ((((Hugs))))

Hippi - thanks for having my back on this one. What is "Sicko"? My sister-in-law mentioned something about this Mike Moore guy the other day but my brother said he was crazy so I disregarded what they were talking about. Crazy like me, I guess. Should have listened to the conversation. Local media is heavily guarded as I live just outside of Atlantic City. Not much "negative" press gets through there especially in the summer, so I will have to go out of town if I want my case known. Maybe we all should get on our soapboxes now. I wish I knew the reason behind doc's illogical thinking. My theory is they are all Freudian here.

Hopefully the nephrologist will be decent and will actually look. That is if I ever get off the waiting list to see him. Proteinura, huh? Looked like beer with a head on it to me. Never did like beer.

Yeah, they are bringing out the Irish in me. Heck, the French too. This is one ship that I will go down with if need be. Unacceptable and I am done tolerating it. Won't need to hang, I'll be the one swinging. Need lots of hugs though - Thanks so much for everything, means a lot - Kristin

The frothy beer looking urine is definitely one of the big red flags for spilling protein in your urine. As far as Michael Moore goes, he can be pretty extreme ( I personally like him, but that's neither here nor there) - he's not afraid to tell it like it is though and regardless of what people think of his other documentaries, "Sicko" seems to be pretty based in facts that anyone can look up and check out. You can google Sicko or Michael Moore and find out more. I need to shut up because we aren't supposed to talk too much about political stuff, although I guess this isn't too political. Anyway, the documentary is about how bad our health care system is and how it fails so many people, especially those without insurance. I'll jump on the ship with you and will be there for you through this - we all will be. I hope the wait for the nephrologist isn't too long. I'm sending you some more ((((hugs))))

Hi Kristin,

Hippi is right, urine that looks like foamy beer is a defintie sign of protein in your urine, and protein loss over time does cause kidney damage. It is also possible you have a kidney infection with the kidney pain and blood in your urine. (Kidney disease itself is NOT painful.) You need to have your urine checked, if not by a nephrologist, at least by your PCP. Please let us know how you make out.

I wonder when he started it. I wrote him a letter, I was working on a documentary and getting help from one of his close friends and he gave me tickets to pets or meat and other stuff when I lived up there. I wrote him an email when I first started at the forum here asking him to please look into social security and what it does to people, that I was the young pretty girl he met trying to do this documentary with his friends and hitting him up for money and was struck down in the middle of it with illness. He must have already been working on it. I never got a reply. I guess because he was already doing it. No one would recognize me now anyway, I've changed physically so much. Just a weird coincidence I guess. He gets lots of email and probably deletes most of it. I used to know so many people, now I just stick to myself.
