I have had a weird kind of thing happen a few times that I forgot about until yesterday.  Yesterday I was especially tired and was riding in the car for a while and the skin on my feet, lower legs, and hands felt very tight.  It felt very uncomfortable.  It was gone by this morning, so I don't know if I was just retaining some water or what.  Like I said, it has happened a few times in the past too, but it always goes away.  Has anyone else had this?  Of course I wonder a little about scleroderma when this happens, although I know it's not very likely.

I've had feelings like that the last 2 times I've traveled - once by plane, once by car. I don't know if we get extra salt or if that is one way the lupus is protesting about the change in scenery?? I've not had a chance to ask a rhuemy about this, but I was comforted by the fact that it went away. However, it's probably some little clue we should be tracking on our symptom calendars...what fun.

Lynnwood, I wondered if it has something to do with traveling too. I think I maybe heard something about retaining fluid while traveling because you sit in the same position for so long. I agree it's a good thing that it ends up going away, so it's probably nothing to worry about . Hopefully I'll remember to mention it to my rheumy when I see him again. Maybe I'll start a list on my computer now, so I can add things and not forget, unless I forget where I put my list :)

When I started reading your post I also thought "scleroderma". But the suggestion that it could be caused by travel also makes sense and that's the answer I'm counting on for you. I'm glad you're going to put it on your list. In order not to lose your list, save it onto your screen. Even if you forget where you put it, you'll eventually see it there. smurf

Hmmmmm . . . my first thought was dehydration, but water retention does make sense. Drinking extra water is always a good thing for all of us and it actually helps relieve water retention as it causes the body to willingly give up the retained fluid . . . kind of a weird phenomenon, but really worth a try. Hippi, with all the D you've had recently, it could even be an electrolyte thing . . . not sure how you would know, but if it is, it would really keep you feeling awful. I'm sending you some herbal tea and another hug!! Blessings!

Hippi,

I'd go with the ideas the others have given you. I have scleroderma in overlap with lupus. That is not usually how the skin tightening in sclero starts out so I think you can breath easy in that regard.

(((HUGS))) It does sound like the traveling makes sense. Our bodies are so suseptical (sp?) and so sensitive to different things and changes that it sure does sound like a possibility. I hope you can figure it out soon. Sounds like a good thing to put on your list for your next rheumy appt.

Are you sure its just the skin or your muscles too? I was also thinking in addition to electrolyte problems during travel mentioned above that maybe your back may be causing some tension. My legs and arms get rock hard when my fibro is bad and my back is bad, also my skin is very thick and dry due to endocrine problems. The only time I had what I think you describe is when I had an allergic reaction, like really fast, due to a yellow fly bite and my whole leg swelled up. I hope you figure it out, it sounds disturbing. Will be thinking of you and praying for you to be better.
