I know this isnt for dogs but last year i had to put a german shorthaired pointer (we got this one in tenn from a breeder) down a week before she turned one year of age.It was awful.I never knew that dogs could have it until heidi was sick and we spent a ton of money to treat her then deicided to do a skin biopsy.Well we finally got a new german shorthair pup from ohio well last tues she started showing the same skin symptoms and i took her to the vet and spent another 300 dollars and the went ahead and did the biopsy and they called today and said she had lupus.I know it is a disorder knon to this breed but we have had 10 shorthairs and 2 of them have ended up with lupus.The vet said he has been a vet for 15 years and our first dog was the first case of this he has seen what is the luck that the 2nd case he has seen is from the same people. He said we will most likely have to put her down also.We got her for my daughter and to hunt and she is 2 and when we took her to the vet she was already crying "she said she loved belle and didnt want to take her to the vet. sad

Oh my gosh! I didn't realize a dog could get lupus! I heard someone else on this board talk about a dog with lupus, but didn't realize it was an actual dx . . . . I just thought it was an autoimmune issue. I'm so sorry you've had so many problems with your pups. How very sad for you. It is so hard to watch a pet suffer . . . we always wish they could talk so they could tell us how they are feeling. For sure, I would try using a holistic food. This would be a food, at the very least, which does NOT contain by-products or byproducts (which contain anything from bowel contents to tumors). You will see an increase in energy and personality in about a week when you make such a switch. If you need some sources, just let me know. They sell several good brands in Pet Supplies Plus. The other big name pet stores may carry some now, but they didn't when I was on the hunt. Some good names are Merrick, Solid Gold, Wysong, Newman's Own, Canidae. Keep us posted on how they decide to treat your pooch. OY!!! So sad!! Blessings!

With Lupus and hunting dogs the only treatment is to put them down.They say within the first you they will pass away either of the disease or the medicine you give them just to keep them comfortable.So when my husband gets back into town we have to make our plans.Also with this disorder in dogs you cant breed their mother or any of the siblings.The breeder we got her off of is in Iowa bird hunting with my husband and he was so upset and said he would give us our money back and have his female fixed as soon as he gets home.I just cant believe that we have had the luck to get two dogs from different people in different states and they both had lupus.I told my husband it must be because i have an autoimmune disorder myself i guess i just pick the pups to come stay with me. :)

I have an old rescue dog who has lupus. We adopted her ten years ago and after a couple of biopsies to determine whether or not she had cancer, we finally took her to a vet school. They kept her overnight and sent her home with a dx of lupus. They had us put her on prednisone but the sweet gentle thing got mean and angry so we discontinued it. She's now about 14 and I can tell she's failing. She's stone death and has cataracts and is just getting old and tired. The good news is that it's been about 8 years since her dx. I just let her and our other dog in from the back yard where they've been running and rolling around in the leaves. I'm not sure why your vet puts them down, but perhaps they are another breed. Our dog is part border collie. I wish you so much luck because it's so hard to let a dog go.

One of my good friends is a veterinarian and she has a few dogs that have lupus.  She's been able to put them on a treatment plan and still has these dogs as patients.  Hopefully your vet will find a good treatment plan for your dog.  How strange that you have lupus and not only did you have one dog with it but two!  I wonder if their symptoms are like ours?  Take good care of your pup.  When you're both having bad days at least you'll both have someone to snuggle up with! 

I wanted to say something to you about your comment "I know this forum isn't for dogs  ... mom 1760, there are quite a few animal lovers on this forum and animals are a big part of those peoples lives, those animals are members of our families (me included).  More important this is something that is bothering you, and that is what the support in this forum is about, being there to comfort, listen and help.  I think that everyone would agree with me in saying that it doesn't always have to be "lupus" related, we're suppose to be here for each other and if it's about your pet that has lupus or about your lupus symptoms I would want you to post a message so I could help.  You're in my prayers ... and so is the four-legged one too :)  Hugs!

Hi Mom, I'm so sorry about you pup and bless your daughters heart! I feel so bad for both of them. My dog taco is part blue healer and part queensland heeler. He's my best friend. I live alone and I have had many times since I got sick that he has been there for me unconditionally. They become part of your family. I hope that you check with another vet and get a second opinion. I know you don't want to continue to pump money into the pup. I can't say I blame ya. We have actually had gold labs and choc. labs for hunting. They are excellent hunting dogs as well as loyal companions.

I have made an appt with another vet on friday and i hope that he says that that was a wrong dx.For Gidget I am sorry i wrote that i had an autoimmune and you just assumed it was lupus but i was dx with crohns disease in oct 06.They are just like your family and I would do anything to help them out even if it means spending more money.I only paid 125 dollars for her and i already spent 300 at my vet and his plan is to put her down for another 100 but i am taking her to another vet.They have said at this vet that they have had some cases of dogs showing signs of lupus but it turned out to be a staph infection so i have got my fingers crossed.I also want to thank everyone on this website it has helped me out tremendously with my dx and a few other problems. THANKS A MILLION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yeah

My youngest son lived in Alaska for many years and had a great border collie who developed an auto immune disease but the vet did not diagnose it beyond that as far as I know.  I had just visited there and was very close to the dog and she was gone in 2 weeks.  That was my first experience with auto immune diseases for dogs or humans.

He got another border collie from the same lineage and she has been healthy so far.  Seems like dogs have more problems dealing with it than humans. 

There is a lot of cross breeding in some breeds so it might be that your dogs were related.

Sorry that you have had such problems.  It is very difficult to lose a good pet.
