Low testosterone Levels anyone?

My husband is showing low levels and been prescribed a topical gel. Does anyone have experience with this. I have heard that this can cause loss of strength, muscle weakness and so on. If so how long before he can expect some results? It is my understanding that the antibiotics can cause this and it is pretty common. I would appreciate any input. Thanks, Bev

Hi Bev, welcome to the board!

How long has your husband been sick and how long has he been getting treated?  Does he have any co-infections?

Lyme disease can affect hormone levels.  Hormone deficiences can cause many symptoms that are similar to Lyme.  It is good this deficiency was found.  It may take a little time to improve, but I am sure the gel will help.

It's Bev. I also posted in the past under my daughter's ID Mason's Mom...My husband is improving slowly. Most symptoms are gone now but the severe herxing lasted months and left him bedridden with a lot of muscle wasting. In the last two weeks he is walking with a platform walker. His hands are starting to come back but more slowly. His meds started last July with orals then IV Rocephin now orals again. Since July when herxing began I have had to dress, bed bath, shave, feed and you name it. We are finally starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. I haven't been on line much (very busy) and I am getting to old for this stuff! But it is what we do when we love someone. His herxes where unbelievable, all his joint would swell, become inflamed and painful. He felt bugs crawling under his skin, muscle twitching like crazy, headaches, stiff neck and joints, itching. I so appreciate this site, it has given me so much information and comfort. He still has not been tested for co-infections, dr believes if you treat Lyme you treat them. Not so sure about that but we do see things going in the right direction. We may see new doctor when the weather breaks, it is hard for me to get him out to a doctor especially in this weather. Bev

I had low testosterone last summer/fall. I noticed low libido and most of the hair on my legs just disappeared. The hair on my head was very thin. My muscle tone was bad too, but I can't exercise much.

My doctor did saliva testing and my testosterone was almost non exisitent. He gave me a shot in the butt and then prescribed DHEA which is a precurser for the testosterone, so it helps make it or something like that. Six months later the hair on my head is fuller, I'm shaving my legs again and libido is much better.

Treatment for men is most likely different.

Your hubby sounds like he's been through heck and back! And you along with him. I'm happy that you are seeing better days. I pray his progress continues.

Thanks for you input. My husbands hair has thinned dramatically also. We are now waiting for insurance to accept the new prescription, it must be authorized by the doctor. Another bump in the road but we are getting used to them. Glad to hear you are also doing better. I hope you continue to recover also. Bev
