What is your Babesia treatment, meds and dose?

Since there is no LLMDs in the country I am currently at, and was tested positive for only Babesia, and negative for Lyme, I would like to hear the experiences and treatment plan with your Babesia diagnosis.

The doctor here will treat me based on what they found in the medical textbook via Atovaquone ( not sure via liquid or tablet method) and Azithromycin for 3 weeks. I was not told the dosage yet, so if you can list the dosage and times per day this would be great.

Babesiosis is simliar to malaria and needs to be treated with a combintion of an anti-malarial (often Mepron or Malarone) and an antibiotic (Zithromax, Biaxin, or Ketek).  I believe that Mepron is stronger than Malarone. 

I agree with KeepHope that now the typical dose for Mepron is four teaspoons daily, often two teaspoons twice daily.  Previously 2-3 teaspoons daily was prescribed.  I believe the recommended dose of Zithromax is 500-1200 mg daily and Biaxin is 1000 mg daily.  I am not familiar with the recommended dose of Ketek.  Hopefully someone else is.  Some doctors are also adding high-quality Artemisinin (anti-malarial herb) to the protocol.

It is my understanding that the minimum treatment time for Babesiosis is four months.  Longer treatment is not unusual.  It can be tough to eradicate.  You can read about Babesiosis starting on page 22 of Dr. Burrascano's Treatment Guidelines at http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf

I am unable to write much I have a full days of a doctors appointment in a few hours including my PCR testings results for Babesia and other co-infections, and must get ready.


I called Igenex and they said that I am not positive for Lyme and you know I believe it since I got Babesia from living in Washington State ( I have the Duncani strain) right before I move abroad.

Ticker what i was thinking was consulting an LLMD from abroad who can direct a physician here who can over see my medication treatment.

The Babesia treatment says 3 weeks yet a severe Babesia condition is 4 months so I need to re-read Dr. B treatment plan ( very informative).
