Problem with scalp sores?

I have this ongoing infection on my scalp, dont know if it is bacterial or fungal. I just get it cleared up and today is back full force. Many oozing sores around the scalp area. I have allergies so sometimes I think it is a reaction. Does anyone have this problem and could it be connected to Lyme?? Suggestions??  I am NOT taking abx so its not from that.  Thanks  D

Dowa - I had a skin problem on my scalp which seems to be very similar to yours. It went away during the last couple of months. But I found out that it may be linked to an allergy against colophonium I have developed. I got in touch with this substance last week and got a rash where the contact happend (on my arms); at the very same time I got sore areas on my scalp again ( first its kind of itching, then mostly over night it starts oozing). I think I found a connection here between an allergy and the scalp problem- after a very long time trying to find it out.

I think that scalp sores are parasite related .. Just my own personal opinion.

I've had lots of scalp problems with my lyme and co-inf's over the years. I agree with KeepHope-a lot of it can be parasite related. Also, candida wreaks havoc on the skin/scalp as well. I'd take a good probiotic. Tea Tree oil is a great natural thing to use. I found that the more probiotics (and rotated with different probiotics) I take, the better my scalp and issues get with that. Thank you everyone. Yes. Graciesmom, they are raised and red and VERY sore. Was Gracies intense fungal/yeast treatment using oral anti-fungals? The doc here gives me antibiotics and it keeps returning so I also think it is fungal and/or lyme. How did they clear it up for Gracie and did it take a long time?    Thanks D

Thank you Graciesmom: Let me ask you one more thing. Most people that have Lyme are having the fungal/yeast issues from the antibioitics, right? I have never done the antibiotics for the Lyme. They (zithro) DO seem to clear the sores up, but they return soon after I stop. If it was fungal the abx would not help, or am I wrong there? Its all very confusing.  Thanks so much  D

Dowa - may I apologize that I put in some info here when you originally put up a question for Gracie`s mom - but it could be of some interest for you too: one day I was talking to my pharmacist about all my skin issues and the sore scalp and lyme; she mentioned a study where they found out that sore skin which is nothing else than an inflamation process in the skin itself ( no matter if it is originally caused by an allergy, neurodermatosis, fungi etc) is immediatelly inhabited by bacteria and (!!) fungi which grow there too/ in addition. So it would make some sense that there is an influence on the skin while taking abx - it may cut down some of the fungal`s "food" produced by bacterial metabolism.

Hi Dowa.  Do you have co-infections?  I think Bartonella can cause this in some people.

Dorit: That makes perfect sense, thanks.

Ticker: Fry Lag diagnosed bart and ehrlichia and then the doctor I was seeing here (not LLMD) said Fry Lab "showed bacteria on everyone" and disregarded the test results. I am still not sure what that was all about. So, I dont know....if I have them or not. Igenex was negative but I was positive on bands #30 and #41. The only other positive test was Bowen and he did not believe that one either. Its been a merry-go-round for years, very discouraging.   D

Graciesmom: I am in Texas (my home is NH) and came out here to work with an environmental health clinic for mold toxicity. I am told there are NO LLMDs here in Texas (by a LD support group) and that everyone here travels to Louisiana for Lyme treatment. I have no vehicle so that is not an option. Dr K has a TWO year waiting list I am told. I have some names of docs on the East Coast if I can get myself back there. Thanks-  D

I also had recurring scalp sores during my recovery from Lyme. Dr. Jenefer Huntoon thought it was due to a combination of yeast, antibiotic residues and toxins as a result of the bacteria dying off. For me, it was a cyclic process and each time the sores came back the symptoms were less severe than previously. The enzymes Dr. Huntoon prescribed immediately relieved the itching and gradually caused the sores to clear-up.

Hi D,

I had/have something similar off and on.

I get this intense scalp itching one day, then the next my head will be all broken out in sores, like ingrown hairs or something.

I talked to my LLMD, who's also a OB/GYN,  she told me is was probably yeast and had me start Nizorel Shampoo.  It's at Costco.  I use it every 3 days or so, and haven't had any more problems. 

Around the same time frame I also got a vaginal yeast infection, so I thought. The doc started me on vag acidopholis suppositories and also gave tea tree oil suppositories to use periodically.  She said that with Lyme patients, we usually will get vag bacteria before yeast.  So I'm asssuming it would probably be good to use a tea tree shampoo too.

Oh, now I'm itching my head again....LOL.

Yes that sounds like the same problem. itching then sores. Can I ask you if the Nizoral shampoo has a fragrance?? I also have severe MCS. Its not prescription correct? Thanks RN  D

active ingred: ketoconazole 1% (anti-dandruff)
Shoot! yes it says "fragrance".
maybe you can find another brand with the active ingred that doesn't have fragrance?

RN: MCS is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, just easier to write MCS. Is the smell of the Nizoral really strong and does it the fragrance stay in your hair after rinsing? I have VERY long hair. Thank   D

Google aveda click hair care, in the all products click dandruff, then scalp remedy will come up It may promote a healthy scalp for u. ive seen it do wonders for many types of scalp problems.

Dowa - if you are that much in MCS as I am, maybe healing earth is an option for you: it does not smell, is all natural, antiinflammatory and helps affected areas with detoxing.

We have a long traditon in using it for haircare too/ recommended for this in package information leaflet.
One needs to get used to it b/c it needs some time to do it with long hair and its bit dirty - I have long hair too but I love it, it helped me very much.

I started to have the scalp sores horrible after I got my Lyme like symptoms. My scalp got very bad, and my dermo said it was warts and cold nitrogen them off. They still come and go, yet not as bad as the wart size.

I get these all the time and they are very painful. Nizoral shampoo works the best on them. They clear up in a matter of days!!!

I have horrible itching on my scalp when I use shampoos containing sodium laurel sulfate (or related compounds). No problem since I started using Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo. I too have MCS, but this product does not bother me at all. Be aware, it does have peppermint oil in it, so if you are sensitive to peppermint, then this shampoo won't work for you. This brand does, however, have other shampoos that do not have peppermint oil in them and also do not have the sodium laurel sulfate/related junk in them.
