I recently had a stool test from Genova Diagnositcs and it came back flying colors for Candida overgrowth.. It was 4+... I emailed the NP at my LLMD's office and she basically told me to discuss it w/the dr at my next appt...I dont have an appt for like 6 weeks...

Anyway, Ive been following the low sugar , carb diet.. however , I sometimes have brown rice crackers, brown rice cakes, and an occasional baked potato... Should I eliminate these things completely? I've been on diflucan for months... Should I try and find another doctor that will treat this in the mean time?

Hezzer: I just wanted to tell you that I was told here that if you test for yeast while taking an anit-fungal the results are often high (misleading) because the yeast is dying off and coming out in the stool. Makes sense, too bad the doc did not tell you that as the result is most likely incorrect. And on the mold diet I follow, rice and potatoes are not allowed in the beginning and sometimes are added later on when you are feeling better. Good luck  D

I don't know about rice cakes but potatoes do turn into sugar in your body. From what my doctor told me, you should get off of all sugars when trying to get rid of yeast. Sugar is what yeast feeds off of. Maybe try to eliminate it now and as the other poster said....when you start feeling better, then eat a little. I wouldn't go overboard with it though. I think bread also turns into sugar once digested. Maybe look it up online and see which foods turns into natural sugars once digested.

Hezzer, are you taking any probiotics? This is a must for us candida fighters (especially with all the meds/anti's we're on). I take two different kinds of probiotics (good bacteria), PLUS I just had to break down and start taking fluconazole (diflucan) today.....starting to get all the signs!! ARGH!!! If it's not one thing, it's another. Best of luck to you!!

PS-in place of bread, I eat Ezekiel bread-which is actually sprouted grains, not flour per say. Have you heard of this?

Antifungal tanins are another way to help control yeast. I used a product called Tanalbit with some success (no financial connection, just a happy customer). Yes, I also was taking probiotics at the same time, so that is a must.

All carbohydrates break down into sugars, however it is the carbs from grains (wheat, rice, etc.) and starchy veggies (like potatoes) that feed the yeast. So I would think rice cakes would be a no-no. Make your own substitute products using nut flour...tastes pretty good and won't feed the yeastie beasties!

Hi hezzer, Try to eat a low carb., low glycemic diet. Any carb can feed yeast. Ask your doc to change your current diflucan to another antifungal to see if it works better for you. Ask about adding a natural anti-yeast supplement that has caprylic acid in it. An example of one is a brand called "Yeast Defense" by Nutrition NOW. It can be purchased at health food/vitamin stores. There are many other supplement choices too. There are mouth washes you can buy or make to help control yeast in the mouth so that it is not swallowed (which helps repopulate yeast in the gut). The ideas from the others here are good too!

Ultra-Flora DF from Metagenics is my probiotic of choice. Nystatin also helps with intestinal yeast. Diflucan should blow it away if you also take a good probiotic.

You can rinse your mouth with probiotics to help with yeast in the mouth/throat...just swallow after you're done swishing...
