I've read TERRIBLE things about the way this drug can affect you mentally...I was supposed to start my Biaxin/Flagyl today and I think I'm going to call my doctor and switch to Zithromax or Doxy. I have enough mental crap going on as it is.

If you have neurological Lyme, Zithromax can do the same thing. Zithromax made me forget my families names, that's why I wanted to take Biaxin. It's actually not the drug though, it's our disease.

The only thing I've heard of to watch for in Biaxin is heart palpatations. All antibiotics have some bad things that can happen. Levaquin and tendinitis. Some people get this really bad. I was on 500mg off and on for a long time and it never happened to me.

If you're really worried, maybe change it but I think you willbe fine.

So did you ever take Biaxin? Did you continue the Zithromax? What happened?

I've read all the things on "ask a patient" about Biaxin and people taking it for sinus problems or strep or something even got the hallucinations and heart stuff...so I don't think it's the lyme - I think it's the drug.

That's what I was prescribed but only took it for one day so far. I tried Zithromax twice and had that forgetting my families names and who my husband was both times. I've taken Zithromax before and it's never done that.

Hallucinations is a herx reaction. I was seeing weird things at the corner of my eyes that looked like it was moving while I was on Amoxicillian.

Do whatever makes you comfortable. In my opinion, I don't think it's the drug but I'm not a doctor. My combination was either Mepron and Zithromax or Mepron and Biaxin. I chose Biaxin because of how weird I felt on Zithromax. But, my doctor told me that I may have to be on Zithromax in the future.

When do you start with your picc line?

I'm waiting to find out about my insurance. The deadline is June 15th, so I should know any day if I will be approved. My doctor has everything set up with the clinic so as soon as I get my insurance I just have to call and confirm everything with them and I'm good to go.

If hallucinations is a herx reaction, do you think these people were experiencing the die off from their sinus and strep infections? Or is it possible the drug actually alters something in your brain...?

You're on Biaxin now? Anything weird happening?

jen you never know but maybe the folks who had this had lyme and didnt knwo it. as many go for yrs without knowing they have lyme. if you already have the meds try them and see how you do on them. if you have trouble them stop and call your doctor. good luck

I'm not sure what's going on with them. Maybe they do have something inside that is dying off. I don't know. I look at it this way....pretty much every medication has side effects. I've been on so many that could have caused this or could have caused that but never did. I think everyone reacts differently. If you're that worried, then try Zithromax first and see if it helps. If not, then you can always switch to Biaxin later.

I only took Biaxin for one day so I can't really say what it does or doesn't do quite yet. I had to get off all medications because I had a terrible herx and didn't know which one or if all of them were making me herx. My doctor wants me to go ahead and try one medicine at a time and I'm starting with Nystatin first. I didn't have anything out of the ordinary happen though but it was just one day.

Sorry I can't give you more information. I wish I could. Maybe by the time you are ready to start, I will have had more experience with it.

Hi,

I've been on Biaxin. The side effects it gave me was a bitter taste in my mouth all day and sleepdisturbances.

I,ve had herx reactions, but the worst were from Doxy when I started ABX.

I was on Biaxin a few years ago and then also have been on daily since December 2008 (had a triple combo with biaxin, tindamax & omnicef 3 months and then just Biaxin & omnicef). The best I've ever felt was on the triple combo. I personally did not experience severe herxing (additional fatigue at most). I'm switching to Biaxin and LDN very soon. Biaxin has not been a hard one for me. Flagyl was my hardest so far.

Biaxin was okay for me but coming off of it has been hard. It's a drug for respiratory infections and I believe it caused some problems with my sinuses. I noticed within a few weeks that I had a lot of head pressure being ON this drug. Actually, the doc overdosed me at 1000 mgs for six months, so coming off has been awful.

I recommend it for brain fog. But you may not sleep well and feel sluggish.

That is what I have taken for siusitis in the past, and was on it for 3 weeks in March, when we thought it was that. Then went on doxycycline for about 5 wks, and then 1 month of IV cefriaxone. I've never been on it (biaxin)for prolonged periods of time, but like CajunGrl said, they all have possible side effects, and affect everyone differently. If you don't feel right about something, there may be a reason for it, but at the same time you have to trust that your treatment is going to work and help you to heal.

A million years ago, I took 2 pills at 500 mg per day of azithromycin for a few months and it didn't help me at all. At the time, it was about $9.00/pill so I was really annoyed that it didn't help and that's why I still remember the dosage. I was told that you should NOT take it with food as that reduces the effectiveness. When I was given a Z-pack last year, the pharmacist told me to try to take it on an empty stomach so it would work better.

I was on Biaxin for a long time, maybe 8 months, and I believe it helped me a lot. It took away a lot of the neuro stuff. I only stopped it because I was pregnant. This was about 17 years ago when we were usually treated with one med at a time. I don't remember the dosage but it was more than one pill a day. I credit Biaxin for giving me a life. The only side effect I remember was the awful taste in my mouth. I would definitely remember if I had hallucinations or other mental stuff. I thought I was having emotional problems from it but it turned out that I was pregnant.

Were I to have a significant relapse, it would be my first choice med.
