Hi everybody,

 

Has anyone bought this brand of natural bug repellent and does it work well?  I found it a year or two ago on the web, but I have never seen it in a store.  Please let me know what you think of it.  I am trying to find non-toxic stuff to put on our SKIN to repel ticks, mites, mosquitos etc.  and am looking for one that actually works!!!

Hi bablymers,

I haven't tried the 2 products you listed but I have bought a product that is all natural called Best Yet which contains cedar oil.

I spray it on my legs when I am gardening or going on nature trails and I love this product!  It is supposed to repel ticks as well as all sorts of bugs.

Hi Deejavu,

Thank you for the product info. I will check it out! And thanks for your personal review too! Do you ever use anyting to treat your clothing, that is also natural? We have used a product for clothing that really works well, but it is not good for the skin and is not non-toxic.

Hi again bablymers mom,

This morning we went hiking on another nature trail and this time we sprayed the cedar oil on our clothes and skin and no stains.   Lots of mosquitos, flies, and I'm sure ticks as well as other bugs and we didn't get any bites.

I haven't sprayed this product on any "good" clothes yet so I don't know about that.  We were wearing shorts and tee-tops.

The natural repellants that I tried previously didn't seem to work for me, but taking the vitamin B1 does seem to be! I had also bought spray for clothing with permethrin that also works, and is supposed to be less harmful to people and pets.

I haven't tried it but have heard that Dr. Mercola sells a "Bug Off" that is supose to be good. I know he has a lot of products on his website.

I have to second Avon Skin So Soft. I would not spray it on my clothes, but it works like a charm on your skin. The bugs seem to hate it. Also, you get soft skin in the process, lol!

I use REPEL plant Based Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent. It is supposed to repel mosquitoes & Deer Ticks for up to 6 hours.

It also doesn't smell so chemically like most other repellents.

i also agree about the Avon Skin So Soft, as it is sold in the flea markets in Fl.as a bug repellent. my family has used it for as long as i can remember. and it only takes a few drops in your bath water then your covered all day long, and it smells good too.

just mix water and some drops of spirimint, or peppermint oil in a spray bottle. Safe for clothes and bugs hate the smell. SO good to spray on your dog, too.

That reminds me, in one of my gardening books, it mentions that lavender plantations don't have ticks even when they are surrounded by tick infested woods. I've never heard of lavender as a repellant, and I have only a couple plants outside, but they are usually not tolerant of the cold winters here, so the idea of planting them all around the yard wouldn't work for me, but maybe for those in the south. I don't know how to verify this. I've never seen a lavender plantation.

I kept reading about guinea chickens being good to eat lots of insects, but they also tend to travel all over the place looking for them, so we have not tried that yet. We used to raise a few chickens for the eggs, but stopped a couple years ago. If your neighbors are very far away from you or don't mind stray chickens in their yard, the guineas are supposed to be very effective as far as keeping them out of the yard.

I wish I had a flame-thrower or some napalm. I used to be so green as a gardener. Didn't want to kill the bugs in my yard. Why was I so.....dumb? I wish that I could personally kill every single tick out there, one by one. That would be so great for me! And I catch spiders to take them outside....wouldn't kill a bug or bee....except those %*%@#$^!(@$# blood suckers!

I know, this topic is about bug REPELLANT. Not bug killers. You know what's repellant? Blood sucking ticks! I am repelled and appalled.

Hoping no one reads this unless they share my deathwish for all ticks......

i fully understand your point. and i know most things have a good reason to be on this earth. but i really can not think of 1 for a tick. other then to cause us so much pain and suffering.

Hi all! Wouldn't it be nice if there was such a thing as "tick-hunting season"!! Maybe contests to reward the person that killed the most ticks?!! Maybe even contests for best pet-that-eats/kills ticks in a day?!! Ah, one can dream!
