Tooth pain associated with Lyme Disease

Just wanted to pass on my experience. Was diagnosed with Lyme Disease on July 14. Rash had appeared about a week earlier and had become large and tender enough for me to know it was something serious. Concurrent with the appearance of the rash I began to experience sensitivity in one molar. After my Lyme was diagnosed, that same week I had my dentist x-ray my tooth. No evident cracks in the tooth or problem with the filling. Dentist referred me to an endodontist who also took another x-ray; again it was inconclusive. Endodontist recommended a root canal. After a consult, my dentist also recommended the root canal. Even though I was in a lot of pain I decided to wait until I had finished by course of doxycycline before committing to a root canal. I am happy to report that my tooth pain completely disappeared along with my Lyme.

The real question is why didn't either of my dental practitioners know about the connection between Lyme and tooth pain?

The reality is most Dr's know little about Lyme. Dentists even less.

Good for you for waiting. I had two root canals done, cost me over $3000. and later had both of the teeth pulled as the pain was still there. All from Lyme I am learning now. Dentists are not educated about LD, sad but true. D

When your only tool is a hammer every problem looks like a nail. That's the problem with dentists. They only think about one way to stop tooth pain. And of course it just happens to be a very lucrative procedure at the same time.

Dowa, thanks to your (and others') posts on this site, I was able to learn about the connection between tooth pain and Lyme and make an informed decision that saved my tooth and my wallet.

NO ONE understands much about Lyme disease. That's the problem. I had a dentist who wanted me to have jaw surgery to fix the click in my jaw. The jaw has a joint, and Lyme effects joints. After antibiotic treatment, my jaw stopping sticking. The surgery was completely unnecessary.

Keep reading up on this forum and boost up your immube system as much as you can. I don't want to scare you...doxy did not work for me..and it all came back with a bang over the years.
Get on collidal silver and as many supplements as you can asap.
Teeth get very sensitve with lyme. And be careful with the drugs that they give you for a root canal. Your system could react to them now.
I had some dental work done after my lyme and my face blwe up like a blow fish...lol. fright night.

Thank goodness, my dentist told me, "I don't see anything wrong with those teeth" and "If you get to the point that you HAVE to have something done, I'll look again, but I don't see anything that looks like it needs fixing now".

Still have my teeth and occasional tooth pain, but I know it's not really my "teeth".

Include me in the "temporary toothache club."  I'm scared to death of the dentist, so I just kept dealing with it and putting it off.  Then one day, no more pain and haven't had it since.  Also found out that Lyme patients can suffer from chronic sinusitis and that can radiate into the teeth.

I'm still sick, but slowly improving.  Been on IV Rocephin since 2/28/09 - LLMD wants to keep me on it for one year (so far, insurance has approved, it's a month-to-month thing).  Also taking 400mg doxy daily.

If a person has Lyme and co-infections they should not get dental work done cause most of the time the pain is due to the infections... My mouth was killing me and once I started the treatment it disappeared...bad thing is is that it is back...my teeth are killing me again and I suspectI got reinfected.
