Meds: Longer vs. stronger (Doxy)

Hi again all,

After a tick bite three weeks earlier and flu symptoms, my doc put me on Doxy for a month (no bloodwork taken).

It's only 100mg twice daily. I've read on here that 300 mg to 400 mg is preferable. Here's my question:

Should I take the 100 mg 2x daily for a month as prescribed, OR

Double up on the meds each day, which would shorten my treatment? I have no idea if I'll ever be able to get more meds for this. I'm thinking I will maybe take the two pills daily for the first two weeks, and then do a third week where I double up the meds.

I would call and speak with my Dr. and ask to be put on a stronger dose, as well as for 6 weeks minimum.

You caught this so early, you have a wonderful chance of beating it...if you can get strong enough Doxy for the right period of time!!

Push your Dr. for this..Print out an article and show it to him/her. Fight now for your health, so you will not be fighting years down the road.

Good luck getting your doctor to do that most doctors follow CDC protocol which is 21 day supply of doxy 100 mg twice daily. I had to fight for testing and drugs and it wasn't easy. They like to take a wait and see approach hoping you get better and they don't have to deal with lyme.

Hi looking,

Print out this page and bring it in to your doctor. Tell him/her that the IDSA guidelines are being investigated and that you think this dosing is best for you. This is a paragraph about the amount of Doxy you should be taking:

Dosage

Increasingly, clinicians recommend that certain drugs used for Lyme disease be given at higher daily doses: for example, 3,000–6,000 mg of amoxicillin, 300–400 mg doxycycline, and 500–600 mg of azithromycin. Some clinicians prescribe antibiotics using blood levels to guide higher doses. Close monitoring of complete blood counts and chemistries are also required with this approach.

Wait...I am getting a little worried because I am only taking 100mg of Doxy twice daily. And I am almost finished with my 30 days. Does that mean that I am probably not cured because I wasn't taking enough abx anyway?
