I have known I have Bartonella, and I was treating it with azithromycin+Plaquenil for 6 months. Felt really great.

Now I switched to Rifampin+minocycline for Bartonella starting a month ago. Herxing a lot.

But just in the past few days, with the full moon and that time of month approaching (lined up together), I am feeling really malaria-ish and awful, worse than I've felt since starting any of the treatments.

This is not my usual herxing, not the usual pain, tiredness and mild sick feeling. Instead, I am having heating and chills, headaches, pain behind the eyes, a feeling of a malaria-like disease (the only way I know to explain it) etc. like I used to have before starting on the zith+plaq.

1) Can zith+plaq treat Babesia, even in a small way? because it seemed to be keeping these symptoms under control while I was on it. Doesn't plaquenil treat malaria?

2) Could I have had Babesia all this time, but had the Bartonella symptoms more intensely? I have very strong Bart symptoms but only minor Babs symptoms. I've had shortness of breath a lot, but not right now very much.

3) Is it ok to take Babesia treatments on top of Bartonella treatments? e.g. could I take Mepron on top of Rifampin+mino? I tolerate my abx really well, no elevated liver enzymes.

I am planning on calling my doctor on Tuesday to see if I can get in for a quick phone appt to see what to do. Just wanted to ask for input so I can be more educated when I'm talking to him.

I am not sure but I think plaquenil can treat babesia. Mepron is one of the best drugs to treat babesia, but it should be paired with a macrolide drug such as zith to keep it effective.

You can definitely treat bart and babs and lyme at the same time. My LLMD thinks that is the best approach.

My entire family has lyme and I have noticed that when we knock down one infection, the symtpoms of the other infection become more prominent! It is like that Whack-a-mole game. You knock one down and another just pops right up. I have heard this from others as well.

So, you probably have both infections at once, as many people do. My three young children have all tested positive for lyme, bart and babs microti and babs duncani.

Are you having more sweats during the day or night? That is one of the most common babs symtpoms. It does sound like babs to me from what you are explaining.

You can take Mepron with rifampin (my son is) but it is not an ideal combo b/c the rifampin makes the Mepron a little less effective. But my son has done well on this protocol. He's also taking clarithromycin, which is a macrolide and is improtant to take with the Mepron.

That sounds just like it - whack a mole lol ;-). As soon as one started going away I got hit by the other.

Yes, I am having sweats now - a little bit after taking my Bart drugs, ironically (there's the whack-a-mole part for you).

One good option to go after lyme, bart and babs is Mepron, Zith and Bactrim (also with artemisinin). This is working for 2 of my kids (they see Dr. J in CT). The other one needed rifampin to get at his bart. (my theory is that he had two separate strains of bart, since the first combo helped a lot but then he started going downhill with bart symptoms again (anger, head buzzing, tantrums, migrating muscle aches, bed wetting,etc...).
