Hey guys, I might be able to shed some light on this because I am currently going through the process myself (albeit as a Federal government employee). At least as far as the Feds go, I first HAD to apply for Social Security benefits as a condition for EVEN being eligible for a disability retirement under FERS (the Feds retirement system). I have retained who is considered the foremost attorney for this kind of case law and securing disability for employees (for Feds). My reason for this is simple. If you think Lyme is considered controversial by professionals in the medical community who can't seem to agree on how to treat it, imagine having your application being reviewed by an intake personnel specialist with no formal medical training/experience at all?
From what I understand, your only chance to "qualify" (be approved) for Social Security benefits before the age of 62 (under some sort of disability separation from your employer) is if you are deemed TOTALLY and PERMANENTLY disabled according to existing criteria established by SSA. Unfortunately, my understanding is that unless Lyme has confined you to your bed for the rest of your life or caused a paralysis that precludes you from working at all, and this can be substantiated by your physicians, this is about the only way you will qualify if you try to argue that Lyme is the sole or primary justification. Expect little help from Social Security's physicians in this process. This is one of the reasons I retained an attorney for this process, because almost without exception, Lyme and other chronic fatigue and soft-tissue disorders are viewed both by the Office of Personnel Management (and even more so by SSA) to be conditions that "wax and wane" (exact language, I believe), and 99% of the time are insufficient in justifying Social Security disability benefits. I don't mean to be negative. That's my understanding from talking to my attorney and researching the matter independently and reading others' personal accounts in various forums. I hope I am wrong, but I fully expect to be denied.
