IV v. Rocephin shots

My LLMD wants me to go on IV rocephin.  Unfortunatly, I can't find anyone willing to put a PICC line since my LLMD is out of state.  I'm still looking at my options.  This is rediculous.  Regardless, are shots as effective as IV rocephin?

if your doctor writes the perscription, usual a local hospital will install it. Well, at least in NJ. You just need the magic perscription.

Do you have a local doctor that is willing to work with your LLMD? If you can find someone, you shouldn't have a problem getting a picc line.

I don't know much about the injections.

Thanks for the responses.   In Indiana you HAVE to have a local doctor OK the PICC line....the rocephin Rx can come from out of state.  I'm going to meet with my GP on Friday to see if he will give it the OK.  However, he might not.  PICC lines do carry some risk and he might not want to involve himself in this mess.  Hard to blame him.

If you get the picc, make sure your doctor gives you a script for actigal to keep the bile flowing and to stop sludging of your gallbladder.

If you can't get an actigal perscription (I couldn't) there is a vitamin supplement called A-F Betafood by Standard Processing for gallbladder support I took it the whole time I was on Rocephin and my gallblader sonogram showed no trouble. Its better than nothing.

kendal122, How expensive are the Rocephin shots?  Also, how often and for how long did you take them?

Just a quick update. My GP didn't seem happy about the PICC line. However, he said he would get ahold of my LLMD and discuss the situation. I'm really frustrated to say the least. But I certainly understand my GPs concerns. At this point I'm not very optimistic that he is going to give it the thumbs up. It's been an exhausting week between going to the LLMD and trying to arrange the PICC/IV rocephin. Not sure I want to continue to use what little energy I have to 'push' for a treatment that my insurance may not cover (and if they do they won't cover it for long). Depressing.

I'm wondering if the shots would be a good alternative but it seems most do IV. Why is this?

Needshelp,  I'm in Crown Point, what LLMD do you see?   I couldn't find one in the state of IN, or IL.  What does your LLMD say about Rocephin shots?  I haven't been able to find anything out about them.  Take Care, KO

I go to a LLMD in PA....Dr. S. I haven't discussed Rocephin shots with him. He ordered IV. If I continue to have problems getting a PICC line I may ask if he can re-write the order for IM shots.

Let me know what he says about the IM Rocephin, I've asked about it on here but never had much response so I don't know if LLMD don't recommend it or why.  I saw Dr. C. in FL and he wanted to put me on IV Rocephin, but I didn't feel ready to take the leap, and I couldn't find anyone to sign on, most docs don't want anything to do with Lyme disease past MAYBE 2 - 3 weeks of oral abx.  Good Luck, KO

I'll let you know if I get on the IM shots. You had trouble getting the IV approved? Was it an insurance issue or trouble with MDs?

I have read that the IV Rocephin is as good as the IM Penicillin, however the IM Rocephin is not as good as either.

Therefor, if you cannot do the IV Rocephin you may want to try the IM Bicliin (if you are not allergic), weekly shots.

Needshelp, I would have needed to have a local doctor to follow up with and there are NO LLMD in Indiana.  I didn't feel ready to take all that on.  My PCP said she would do my follow up, but I know she had no idea what that entailed.  It was just more hoops than I wanted to take on, and I wasn't so sure that IV Rocephin is the answer, so many on here have been on it once, twice or even more times for extended periods and still are not cured.  Good luck!  KO

Thanks for your repoly. I'm still waiting to hear back from my GP about getting the PICC line (see is reviewing my medical records and suppose to call my LLMD). I'm not sure he will want to involve himself. I agree, in Indiana (and probably other states) there are a lot of hoops to job through. I probably won't pursue it any further if my GP says no. It doesn't seem like the efforts so far have paid off and I rather focus my energy on options that won't be such a hastle. If the IV rocephin doesn't work out I will see if my LLMD will prescribe IM bicillin or rocephin.
