Diflucan and Rifampin?

I'm taking Rifampin with Doxy and Azithromycin, and I just wanted to take Diflucan but I read it can be dangerous with Rifampin. I don't know why, I just think maybe it's too much for the liver but maybe there is another reason.
My tongue is so white and my stomach is big since I'm taking ABs so I think I need Diflucan.
Can somebody help me?

I never found it listed as being dangerous with Rif but in my research there are two things that should be considered

1) Rif is tough on liver and antifungals ususally have a very negative effect on liver (Fluconazole is the least problematic of all antifungals that I have researched)

2) Rif can loose it's effect if taken concurrently with antifungals such as ketoconazole which is quite toxic.

They both work very well for the brain, as they both penetrate the CNS. You may want to take the Rif and after the half life, add the fluconazole as to not loose the strength of the Rif.

This is just from research, so ask a professional.

If you are seeing a doctor he/she should be testing your liver function to make sure you are ok with your medicines.

Have you seen a doctor about your oral thrush? You may want to do the Nystatin (swish and spit) if you have liver concerns. Nystatin can be swallowed and is supposed to be absorbed by the intestines and not the liver.

JenninPA = just read your blogspot. Was wondering where your dr. is and would you recommend? I am in NJ but looking for doctor WHO WILL LISTEN and sounds like you have found just that. Thanks.

My Doc is in Kennett Square, he is great. I considered not going back because of cost, but I went anyway and it just reminded me of how great a doc he is. He listens to you and takes LOTS of time with each of his patients. He does alot of Lyme research on his own too. I started feeling better a week after I started his protocol. I have not had any fatigue at all. I do still get muscle and joint pain, but I think it's due to my diet. If you send me an email [email protected], I will give you his name and info.

I just wanted you to know that Diflucan can be hard on the liver. If you do decide to take it, make sure your liver enzymes are checked every few months.  Nystatin is another option. It goes through the gut and is supposed to bypass or be very minimal on the liver.

Chantal - I know you said that Diflucan hurt your liver, but I've been on it a few months and my liver enzymes are checked every 6 weeks and they are fine. Also I mentioned it to my Doctor and all of his patients are on it and none of them have liver issues. I think it depends on the person and since this is the only thing that has helped me I wouldn't want to hinder someone else from trying it, as long as they have their liver enzymes checked.

The one and only Herx I had was on Rifempin and Doxy. I wish that "recovery" had lasted. Take only what is prescribed and what you are comfortable with. If you're not sure, I have found that it's best to stop and call the doctor.... and let them tell you what to do.

It is funny that you should post this because I just took my first diflucan pill about half an hour ago.

Last year when I saw the LLMD and could not tolerate Levaquin his final treatment was Rifampin and biaxin for the bartonella and diflucan for the lyme.  It not only kills fungus but also lyme and is especially good on the cyst form

When the abx combos made me so dizzy I could not walk  I went on herbs  but the herbs failed and 8 months later I started the rifampin and zithro (instead of the biaxin).  I realized I was not addressing the lyme part of the equation but put it on ignore.  Just a couple of day ago my right arm seized up in such pain I cannot move it and there are twinges in my knee as well.  The old lyme is back.  But I also felt a sharp pain in my shoulder, just like what started the tendonitis after levaquin.

What to do now!?

This morning  I was so lucky to find an article on lymenet that said diflucan can be used instead of abx to treat lyme disease.  The article suggested cycling diflucan and biaxin.  50 days on diflucan and then 20-30 days on biaxin.  So I am trying the diflucan to see if it addresses my pain.  It is supposed to be very good for neruo symptoms too.

nefferdun - my neuro symptoms are almost completely gone and I have only been taking diflucan. I do of course have my days, but overall it's gone. I do take Cefidiner when I feel I am herxing.

Yes, my liver enzymes were elevated by Diflucan and my liver swoll up but I was told my by LLMD that diflucan is hard on the liver. If you google it, you will find the same information. I'm not trying to sway anyone from taking it. It's great that it worked for you but others need to know the side effects.

My doctor said that he has used Diflucan to treat Lyme Disease. When I took it, I actually herxed on it. I was glad he told me that because it made me feel pretty bad.

Just curious, I was prescribed Diflucan along with Doxy and Biaxin (Clarithromyacin is the generic). I take the generic form of Diflucan, which is Fluconazole. Do you think Fluconazole has the same healing effect on Lyme's as Diflucan? I was glad to read Fluconazole is not as hard on the liver as Diflucan, but now I'm wondering if it has the same healing effect as Diflucan???
