Hi,

I have not been responding well to oral antibiotics for my neuro lyme and am thinking about going the IV route. However I really really must be able to keep up with my horsebackriding passion in order to keep myself going through this medical ordeal. Is it possible to ride (competitively if possible) while on IV abx? Has anyone done it?

I just can't fathom being able to keep my spirits up without my horse fix.

Hi Fleetwood,

Usually you have a picc line inserted inside the fold of your arm. In my opinion, I don't think you will be able to continue to ride as the line may get yanked out. Your doctor will be able to tell you your limits.

I had a picc line in my upper arm for about a year. My limitations only lasted until the site itself healed. I picked up something heavy after it had been in about 3 days and it started bleeding. I wouldn't have wanted to ride a horse, but I did ride my scooter a few times when I was feeling steady enough.

I've talked to one person who had it in the bend of their arm and had it removed after a couple of months because it was such a problem because it was in the bend of her arm.

I would think the jostling from horseback riding would be uncomfortable with a PICC no matter where it is inserted in the arm or how long it had been since it was inserted...Also, you would not be able to lift things heavier than a certain amount (without risking damage to the PICC line)...and I wouldn't want to try to reign in a runaway horse with the arm with the PICC in it...definately discuss with your doctor!

I've had my PICC line for 19 months and I still have trouble doing some simple/basic things with the arm with the PICC.  Showering is also a challenge, though not impossible.
