I've been having a couple of new issues for the past couple of months (or so)...wasn't really wanting to post them here, but they have started to cause enough concern that I'd love to hear if anyone might be able to enlighten me on what's going on and whether it's related to the Lyme infection.

1) I've noticed the palms of my hands have a strange odor to them...not all the time, just sometimes. I don't know how exactly to describe it. It's not a revolting odor, but definitely not sweet. I guess I'd have to say it might be a mixture of metallic and fungal.

2) Just in the past month or two, my urine has had a very strong odor, so much so that it lingers in the room for a while. There have been a few times when I haven't noticed it, but for the most part, it's always there...and it's like a spicy smell. I've also noticed my urine to often be darker, cloudier, and more concentrated than usual, but no differences in liquid/water consumption. I meant to call my doctor this past week to ask about this, but kept putting it off...

If you've had either of these (or similar) symptoms, I would really like to know what's going on... Thank you!

The smell that you described in your urine is what makes me believe that you probably need to do more detoxing - no matter what or how much you are already doing. I experienced this before I had been able to build up to do all of the different things I do to help myself detox.

Also, as Razzle has asked, it could be due to some med or supplement you are taking.

@Razzle, the medications I take are:

1) OxyContin for pain
2) Vitamin C
3) High EPA Fish Oil

I have been on the OxyContin for a couple of years, actually just decreased my dose during the last six(+) months and I'm down half-way. I take the vitamin C as needed, when I have a bad flair up. These new symptoms aren't effected by whether I take the two supplements, or not.

I had a similar type odor coming from my hands several years back before I was diagnosed with Lyme.

Hmmmm... Have you been tested for Candida or heavy metal toxicity?

Interesting question...I haven't had any problems with candida recently, although it was a major problem during several periods of my life when I was younger. I did have some issues when I first began antibiotic therapy, but took Diflucan as needed and it was never out of control.

I have wondered whether I was ever tested for heavy metals - I can't imagine I wasn't...I think I was tested for just about everything, at least three times! I'm definitely going to mention this stuff to my doctor next month - just sort of wanted to know if anyone else had similar issues...an internet search didn't bring up any hits in relation to Lyme disease.

madrivergirl30, Here's some advice about heavy metal testing. I did mention this before in a post, but it may not have been your post. Don't bother with hair analysis for heavy metal testing. If you're truly metal toxic, it won't show up because the body holds on to it. True metal testing is a challenge 24-hour urine using something like DMSA. My doctor said he uses a combination of EDTA/DMPS/DMSA and I told him if I tried that, it would probably kill me. DMSA alone gave me a mercury reading that was off the chart....and the hair analysis showed nothing. Save your money. Heavy metals and lyme can go hand in hand....keep researching.

How exactly do Lyme and heavy metals go hand-in-hand? I'm assuming you are saying people get them simultaneously - I'm just curious, how so and why? Does Lyme inhibit the body's ability to release metals?

madrivergirl30, I'm winging it here because I don't remember where I read this and just part of it stuck with me. Having both mercury toxicity and lyme (and who knows what else....) I stored a portion of the information away for when I was herxing and whining about it. Lyme has a way of holding on to mercury (or even absorbing it) and other heavy metals. When you're on abx and the spirochetes are dying, they will release anything they are holding on to. This could be viruses, metals, etc. This explained a lot to me personally because 1. I have done all the drugs to chelate mercury, etc. and still my levels are high and 2. when I detox, I taste metal. In my case, I don't know which came first, the mercury toxicity or the lyme (and unknown co-infections). I first said mercury but I've since changed my thinking and I may have had some of these infections since birth..... mercury came at age 18 when I had extensive dental work done. I do know my health went completely down the tubes shortly after the dental work, but it could have been the deciding factor in tipping the apple cart, so to speak.

I just got a call back from my doctor's nurse - doctor wants me to try activated charcoal tablets. I did try activated charcoal powder once and it gave me a stomach ache - not horrible, more like it felt like something was "working" through my system. Does anyone else have experience with activated charcoal? I'm a little annoyed that he didn't give more of an explanation as to what he thought might be going on, or why this was his suggestion...guess I'll have to wait until my appointment next month to ask for details.

I used to experience the horrid cat pee like odor from my underarms, even with an organic "balanced" diet and detoxing. I found that the only thing that truly helped was my one round of doxy - that was about the only thing that the doxy helped me with.

The charcoal is a common toxin remover, (my hormone doctor, not my lyme - suggested I use it at one point) you must drink it with water to keep it moving. You can google it and learn more. Many people recommend it.

Hey, doxy did that for me, too. Once I was switched to babesia meds, the odor came back. I use alcohol rubs to help, but even with detoxing and a proper diet, the odor is persistant. I only use all-natural deodorants, so that may be part of the problem. But I think most of it is due to the bacteria load in me. I'll have to look into the charcoal. This isn't a problem I've mentioned to my LLMD.

Hi Rose, I did the "all natural deodorants" for awhile - NOTHING worked. So, being fed up and tired of smelling I went on safecosmetics site (I think it is .org) and checked out their information for deodorants. I found Ban original roll on listed as more acceptable/safe than many "natural" ones that weren't working anyway (and many you can't even find and if you can they are often expensive). I found Ban (this one specifically) at my local Target Store.

Odd how it comes and goes. I have to wonder if you did another stint of doxy again, even a short one, if it would clear it again.

This subject has been discussed on other boards also. I think it may also be caused by hormone imbalances.

I'm so glad to know others have experienced the same kind of thing! It's really driving me crazy!!! My mother picked up the charcoal for me yesterday and I'll have it later today - will try to remember to follow up to let y'all know if it worked!

Liquid chlorophyll (you can get this at health food stores or online - my Mom likes the one from Nature's Way) may also help with deodorizing the body, if the charcoal constipates you too much (be sure to drink plenty of water with the charcoal).

I too at times have some very strong urine odor, ew.  I also  have heightened sense of smell so I have wondered if this amplifies the "wonderful" experience LOL.    For instance I smell alcohol from a long ways away and this is from my daighter putting mascara on.  Go figure.

Well, I've had intermittent cramping and diarrhea for the last two days, basically since the minute my mother dropped off the charcoal tablets...go figure. I'm a little more hesitant about taking it since doing more research about it online. Like I think I already said, I actually tried the powder (in water) once about a month ago and got a tummy ache immediately (not sure if it was coincidental, but I doubt it). I don't need to add any more ailments to my already long-enough list!

Can anyone tell me what effects you've experienced from charcoal? And whether you took the capsules or powder? Do you eat with it, or not? I know it's very absorbent so you can't take it within two hours of medication, but I'm wondering what it does to anything else in your system (mainly food).

The Liquid chlorophyll is sounding pretty good to me at this point. At least it is something my body is used to since it is a component of plant matter, right?

Has your sense of smell increased? Mine has, its like I can smell better than I ever have I hate to say like a dog, but they do smell further and quicker than we humans, whatever is in me has increased my olfactory sense. I smelled something burning at the dary queen in our car I said something is on fire, My adult kids smelled said no mom I don't smell anyting I continued to smell it and looked furtively for someone burning something in their yard or whatever.. we got our food and took off a good ten minutes later my son who was in the front said wait mom maybe I do smell it. It was in our engine, but the point is I am the first to smell and odors are so much more pungeant than they would be if I didn't have this thing living in me. I wash fastiduously down there because I too can't stand the smell of my urine (at times) its not always bad. but I wonder if i would even notice it if I didn't share my body with an alien.
