Herbal tea options:
Ginger tea can help with nausea. 1/2 to 1 inch fresh raw ginger root, peeled and placed in 1-2 cups water in a saucepan. Cover and bring to a boil. Simmer covered for 5 minutes, then turn off heat and let it sit for another 10 minutes. Cool. Sip one 1-2 cups as needed for nausea. Store tea in refrigerator in a sealed container (I like to use a glass jar) up to 24 hours. You may add a bit of Stevia to the tea if you prefer a sweeter flavor.
Peppermint tea can also help with nausea, but if you have GERD (acid reflux), peppermint can make it worse. Instructions: fill a tea ball with dried peppermint leaf and place in 2 cups boiling water. Turn off heat and let the tea sit for 10-15 minutes. Remove tea ball, and cool the tea. Sip when the tea has reached a comfortable temperature (not too hot or cold). Store tea in a sealed container (such as a glass jar) in the refrigerator up to 24 hours.
You can combine the two above recipes by adding the peppermint leaves to the ginger in water after the water boils.
Essential Oils:
Patchouli - supposed to relax the muscles required for vomiting.
Peppermint - helps with digestive distress, promotes colonic motility, reduces nausea and motion sickness
Acupuncture:
You can find wrist bands in some drug stores (over-the-counter) that are designed to help with a variety of causes of nausea (morning sickness, post-op nausea, motion sickness) by stimulating an acupuncture point on the wrist.
Homeopathics:
Homeopathic Nux V. - for the I feel queasy/nauseated or "want to throw up but can't" sensation. Nux is also good for helping with nausea that is a side-effect of medication or herbs.
Homeopathic Ipecac. (NOT the ipecac. syrup from the drug store!!!) - for that "Ooh I feel like I'm going to throw up right this second!" sensation.
Homeopathic Bryonia - for nausea that seems to hit on waking up, worse from sitting up right after waking up. I used to keep this remedy by my bed because I went through a phase where I would wake up feeling sick almost every morning. Once I started taking this remedy when I'd wake up before even attempting to sit up for a few days in a row, I no longer felt nauseated on waking.
Homeopathic Pulsatilla - for nausea during the menstrual cycle. Works very well for this for me.
Pharmaceuticals:
Benadryl, Dramamine, Claritin, Zyrtec - Non-prescription antihistamines that may help with nausea.
Phenergan, Visteril - prescription antihistamines that may help with nausea.
Zofran (& related meds) - prescription anti-nausea medication (not an antihistamine...it is a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist).
Scopolamine patch - prescription anticholinergic anti-motion sickness medication that comes in the form of a patch that you stick behind your ear...it lasts 3 days.
Reglan - prescription prokinetic drug that can help with nausea, but need to watch out for movement disorder / dystonic reaction side-effects.
Ativan - prescription benzodiazapine anti-anxiety medication that can sometimes help reduce nausea as well.
Other ideas:
Sometimes sucking on ice chips or hard candy, or chewing gum can help relieve nausea.
Detoxing can relieve nausea that is a result of herxing.
A large dose of Vitamin C (i.e., 1-3000mg) prior to chiropractic adjustments can sometimes help prevent side-effects of the adjustment including nausea caused by the release of toxins held back by the out-of-alignment bones.
I'll post more if I think of anything else...
