I'm starting a new thread about EBV here, just as a fresh new start and regarding the little I've just found. I went searching because I've felt so poorly (physically) for the past 2 days, hurting all over. Aches, inflammation, throbbing, chills, desire to go to bed and live there, etc etc.
Following RosesinJan's post, I went to the Harvard school of public health and did a search on chronic EBV and there are tons of articles -- in their leads you can see that almost all of them pertain to EBV being a causative agent of MS. I have not yet had time to read any of them completely, but saw enough to be alarmed.
I also did a search on 'Chronic EBV'. I found a paper (which I've linked, or you may have to copy and paste) that alarmed me, because of my own blood tests. This can cause cancer and a lot of other stuff.
(NOTE that this paper is almost 20 yrs old).
The paper is on 'Severe Chronic Active EBV Infection Syndrome'. I only read 2 pages, because when I saw the chart on the 2nd page, I went to get my lab work from last year.
Both my EBV VCA IgGs and EBV EBNA IgGs are over 5, which, according to this paper, indicates the above, SCAEBV. And note -- after our discussion about IgGs and IgMs, we felt (and the labs interpreted) that we would have to have had an IgM to be active. Well, the lab never even did an IgM on me, probably because the Dr didn't order it, I imagine because that was not what he was looking for.
This paper specifically notes IgG. And it designates CFS on the chart, but CFS is not diagnosed w/ IgGs that high.
We've gone over this stuff before(along w/ HHV6 and Parvovirus B19, of which I have both), not knowing the links or which caused which.
MY gut tells me that contracting Lyme left me suseptible to reactivation of EBV. But now I see that they believe EBV is a causitive factor in MS, so perhaps Roses is correct in seeing it as causative in Lyme. I do not know.
Somehow, we have got to figure this stuff out.
How many of you have been tested for EBV? Could it be that it is EBV preventing many of us from getting well? That maybe, just maybe we CAN know when LYme has been cured, however that we are still sick because of EBV? Can it be EBV causing Lyme to reactivate?
And so maybe this is why so many of you believe that MS is actually Lyme. Because Lyme caused the EBV which caused the MS???
Can any others of you ask to be tested for EBV? I'm going to ask my Dr for a new test!
I will paste the introduction in bold, below, so you can decide if you care to look at the paper (it is long!). Then I will paste the link.
Reports of unusually severe lymphoproliferative disorders associated with extremely high antibody titers against Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) have recently increased. The syndrome, which we designated severe chronic active EBV infection syndrome, is characterized by persistent or intermittent fever, lymphadenopathy, and hepatosplenomegaly and primarily affects children and young adults.
Polyclonal gammopathy and bone marrow suppression are generally observed, and some patients develop B-cell or T-cell lymphoproliferation or lymphoma.
Frequently, EBV genomes are detectable in tissues infiltrated with lymphoid cells. Additionally, it is difficult to establish spontaneous or B95-8 EBV-induced cell lines despite the expression of an activated EBV infection.
We review and report here the published medical literature and our own experience regarding patients with severe chronic active EBV infection syndrome in an attempt to understand this enigmatic syndrome and the possible pathogenetic mechanism(s) responsible for this disorder.
