When I got Lyme disease back in the mid 80's I got the classic bulls eye rash and went on antibiotics the day that it appeared. I had a smart doctor! .... and I did know what Lyme was.
I never got a single symptom and had no herx reaction. I took the prescribed Doxy for a month--probably the standard 200 mgs a day and was cured.
Three months later, I was bitten by an infected tick again! Same rash, same treatment, etc.
By the way, I never saw either of the exact ticks. Just saw the rashes that were thankfully on my torso where they were very noticible.
I do believe I was 'cured' (both times) because I was a healthy, normal, athletic person for the next 25 years.
I can't imagine Lyme could lay dormant for such a long time and rear it's ugly head in 2010. I suppose it's possible, but I doubt it.
Therefore.... I 'believe' I was cured in the 80's and was then re-infected by a new tick bite in 2010.
Unfortunately, I did not develop the classic rash this time (or it was somewhere where I couldn't see it) so who knows when I was actually bitten. Could have been 2009! Or 08! Plus, at the time, I thought you ALWAYS got the bulls eye rash. Wrong!
Anyway....my symptoms developed very slowly and irractically with lots of weird things happening off and on for a period of about 7-8 months. Elbow pain was the first symptom.
Lyme never entered my mind-- or my doctors! Dumb, dumb, dumb!
So I lingered on with the disease for months until I put all the symptoms together and decided on my own (through research) that I must have Lyme.
Doctors did NOT believe me and I did not test positive making the struggle for proper treatment even more difficult. Early on I did not know what an LLMD was either!
Long story short.....if you are lucky enough to get the bulls eye rash and are treated with ABX immediately, you can be cured, IMO.
The trouble with Lyme is when you've had it for a long time-- either months or years-- and DON'T KNOW IT!
A lengthy time period between getting infected and getting treatment can, IMO, determine IF a cure is possible and/or how fast you will be cured.
Once the disease really gets a hold of you (pre-treatment) a long haul in fighting it seems to be the norm.
I am now heading towards 7 months of treatment and am still not out of the woods .....yet. But I am ever hopefull that I will be cured!
Very few symptoms are lingering now or flare up on occasion....but I do feel waaaaaay better than I did last year!
It's just a darn shame that I never got or never saw the bulls eye rash. If I had, proper treatment would have been swift and I wouldn't be where I am today.....still fighting Lyme.
And now it's TICK SEASON in New York again....I'm already pulling them off my dogs..... and dread getting bitten by an infected one AGAIN!
I'm trying to be careful....but I was careful last year and the year before that, etc.......and look what happened!
I'm now wondering how much DEET my body can handle....and am considering moving to Siberia or Antarctica. These might be the only places where ticks can't survive!
