ive been on biaxin 500 mg twice a day for 6 weeks and just added in omnicef 2 times daily on friday. and suddenlyyyy here comes the diarrhea (yes, gross)!! is this to be expected with the addition of a second antibiotic? i never had this issue on the biaxin alone and ive been taking a probiotic. is there anything else i can do and will it go away?? and when should i be concerned? i know c diff is something that many worry about but im not too familiar with it.
im not looking forward to the addition of a third antibiotic, that's for sure!! :(

When I added Flagyl to my usual clindamycin, I had that problem. I upped my probiotic intake, making sure to take the probiotics two hours after each dose of antibiotics. It took about three or four days for my body to adjust.

Keep hydrated, and if it continues, be sure to tell your doctor.

You take probiotics 2 hours after meals?  I have been taking with meals and antibiotics.  Have had some problems when back on azithromicin after 5 days off.  Was good 2 to 3 days after I stopped for 5 days and now on again with same problems.  Flying Nov. 3rd and back on my 5 days.  Do not want to have this problem on the flight smilewinkgrin   What do others do?

I was told taking probiotics too close to taking antibiotics will render the abx almost useless...that is why you should take them at least 2 hours apart. I haven't started on multiple oral abx just yet, but I was given VSL #3 to take with them.

I just realized that once I am on everything, I will be taking about 8-10 pills a day (two drugs are drops, not pills, but still). Crazy. I don't imagine my body will adjust well, at least in the beginning.

Im on a 5 abx combo, rifampin, zith, augmentin, bactrim and flagyl. Killer combo?
Yes its killing the host not the schetes.

And i got loose stools too. watery once a day, thats it not many times a day but still watery. Have stomach upset too. Idont know wht med is causing it but i thinks its the flagyl.

Itake probiotics too, should upping the dose of probiotics help with watery stools?

Sorry if im hijaking the thread but this is happening to me too.

Increasing probiotics should help with that side effect of Flagyl. Take them two hours after each dose of your abx. That's what has worked for me, at any rate.

I think it is the probiotics that are rendered useless by the abx, not the other way around. Someone correct this if I am wrong. Everything I read says that.

I find I have to wait at least 3-4 hours after antibiotics to take my probiotics because my stomach empties out so slowly. So what I do is take abx with my main meals of the day, then have my probiotics with my evening snack (usually mid-late evening).

I actually prefer to be able to take probiotics early in the day, but with all the abx I'm on now (flagyl and andrographis, plus oregano and thyme), there's no way those probiotics would be doing me any good if I took them early in the day. And I figure taking them closer to going to bed, they have all night long to get happy down there...

Oh and another thing about Flagyl ...

Do take another look at your supplements and food choices. Sometimes there are small amounts of alcohol in them. One of my homeopathic detox formulas is 50 percent alcohol! Booze is not totally destroyed by cooking and that can give you some digestion troubles.

Sometimes I eat yogurt with my abx....is that okay to do or should I wait a few hours until after I them my ABX to eat yogurt?

I think you're supposed to separate them by a few hours...the calcium in yogurt can disrupt the absorption of the antibiotics, and you won't get the benefit of the probiotics in the yogurt either.

so ive been really good about taking my probiotics at least two hours away from my antibiotics... and the diarrhea has gone away in the past few days but now i have a bad side cramp on the lower left side, and my abdomen area feels very uncomfortable. is this a possible side effect, to have pain in the region rather than the typical nausea?

Im worrying about the stomach upset will it cause problems in the future if i just ignore it and continue with my combo? I think im on alot of meds!

It is important to take any dairy product at least two hours away from abx. The milk reduces the amount of abx that the body can absorb - not by all that much, but we need every little milligram we can get!

You should have that pain checked out. It may be nothing, but diverticulosis is no fun, and pain in the lower left can be a sign.

My opinion is that you should raise your probiotic dose or find a better probiotic - I prefer to use kefir as it has many more good bacteria than just acidophlius, bifidophilus, and lactobacillus. This will help your bowels deal with so much more!

You are on quite a bit of abx, be sure to protect your stomach at all costs! You only get one stomach!! Even though some abx say to take on an empty stomach, sometimes it 's best to take them with food. You should check with the members here on how they suggest taking them to reduce the concerns that you may be hurting your stomach.

I take acidolphilus and eat yogurt religiously. I only learned about splitting apart eating and acidol, recently. Helped a lot -- I started having tummy probs right after started Flagyl and waiting 20 min to eat yogurt did the trick.

I'll try increasing it to an hr or two after. Thing is, being on so many oral drugs, it's hard to find that time span to work with!

I know what you mean Campl! I would love to take some kind of a binding agent to help me get rid of toxins, but with all that I take, I really don't have a four hour time period that is open! Binding agents need to be taken 2 hours before and 2 hours after taking any thing - food, meds of any type as the binder will stop it from being absorbed into the body!


Try eating something non-dairy instead when you take your Flagyl.

sometimes i think you need to be a doctor to understand some of these posts....you all are on alot more meds than i am....*not that i feel left out or anything*....lol....but all these meds you all take...this was gradual?....could i expect to be put on more meds?..all i take is doxy dhea vit d fish oil andromitesnin *for inflammation and not sure how to spell it*....trazedone vyvannse and i think thats it...lol....well now that i look at it...im not that far behind....*i have got myself tickled*

I felt that way in the beginning -but not so much now!! Keeping up with the pills teas and powders that I use can be daunting on some days.

wait ahahah....forgot about my thyroid meds....lol......now i have really gotten tickled.....but im hopeing the thyroid meds trazedone and vyvannse will be gone when the bacteria is......*crossing fingers*.....but i couldnt imagine being put on more...sheesh.....i just dont know if my tummy is gonna hold up.....but ooo welll im in to win it.....and if i have to be a walking arsenal of pharmaceuticals then so be it.....its a guess n check kinda thing....

im taking two sustenex a day...i dont know how much im supposed to take....its hard to remember to ask the doc until u get home....lol

Why not call the office? It's just a quick question. Be sure you are following the directions on the box until you hear from your doc.
