Check out the following link for a look at a Bb biofilm mass:

Hi Yazzer,
When you have a bit of time would you update me on the exercise limitations you have been dealing with. I am on the upswing and if I run or bike hard, I feel better. My new doctor and alot of the studies indicate that we should avoid hard cardio. What are your thoughts on this?
Best,

My thought is to listen to your body for clues. The standard burrascano protocol says no aerobic exercise. I think that is hooey if you have a solid fitness foundation prior to your Lyme flare. Aerobic exercise is exactly what Lyme which is anaerobic hates! So, it is an effective annihilator of the critters. But don't overdo it so that you herx too much and/or compromise your immune system.
I use my running as if it were another abx. And I detox accordingly. I ran 7.5 miles in an hour Sunday and herxed pretty good Monday. I ran four very fast miles yesterday and have herded some today too. But, I think it essential to being able to fully recover. All my life I would have these flares not knowing it was Lyme and aerobic exercise got me through it. Not only do you get to kill the bacteria, the sweating is a form of detox and it boosts the immune system. Not to mention the positive effect on neurotransmitter function via increased endorphins.
Run, Forrest, run is what I say!

How would running too much compromise the immune system?
I've FINALLY gotten back into running only for the last week or so - but I've never done aerobic exercise while doing my Lyme treatment so I'm still trying to work out the kinks. I've started getting fevers again - every day - but I don't know if it's the plaquenil (which is what made me feel well enough to start running again in the first place) or somehow it's the running. I definitely herx harder - it honestly feels like I have toxins settling into every muscle in my body...is that what you're talking about
with it being bad for the immune system?

I'm a runner too. I know a lot of LLMD's advise against aerobic exercise. I personally find this difficult to adhere to as I have to engage in aerobic exercise as part of my job and I LIKE to run for stress relief whenever I am physically able to.
I have read that aerobic exercise depletes adrenals and
opens up the blood brain barrier allowing more Bb bacteria in. I've also heard that it has a negative effect on NK cells and reduces T-cells which results in compromised immune function.
I don't know if this is true or not. My NK cells are already pretty low, so I don't see how running would be any more detrimental.

Opeening up the blood brain barrier is needed for me since all my critters are in my CNS anyway. I want it
open to send the abx there for the kill. But not too much. That's why you have to really listen to your body. If you have weak adrenals, again, some exercise is exactly what you need but not too much. Too much will be different for each person I believe.
Immune system compromise happens even in a healthy runner when you go into super train mode...say if your training for a Marathon. I have run 4 and you end up logging 35-50 miles a week. I noticed that such a regimen would keep my body in a constant depleted states for a few weeks. Near the end of training you taper down on the running ans your body repairs nicely so you can zoom through the 26.2 miles. BUT, many marathoners will tell you they are more susceptible to colds and the flu at the height of training. That's what I mean by compromising the immune system!
I am running 15-20 miles a week. I was at 35-40 before this latest Lyme flare. I won't go back to that level till I am over it. 15-20 for me seems like a good balance and like I said, it seems to act like another abx for me! I think I'd you read up on running you'll find that moderate levels increase immune modulation.
