What are effective ways to treat pain, without narcotics???

Hi All!

I am just wondering if any of you have any ways of treating Lyme pain without narcotics.  My daughter has been taking hydrocodone and I am very concerned that she may be becoming addicted.  It is hard watching her suffer, and easier to give her a pill. . . but there has got to be another way!! 

We have tried acupuncture without success, but maybe because the practitioner was not familiar with Lyme. . .  

 Any thoughts?

Moxa has helped me with very specific pain problems...I had horrific leg pain that no narcotic could even touch. I started doing moxa on my ankle points & within two days gone. As long as I do moxa daily it doesn't come back.

Moxa is basically burning mugwort. Google it. Its easy to do yourself & cheap.

So sorry to hear your daughter is suffering so much. What type of pain is she suffering from - back, joint, ??

It is the one symptom that is the most stubborn!! She is feeling better again, overall, but is still having muscle pain--mostly her legs. I think it could be complicated from lack of exercise, so this is one thing we are going to work on. Just got her a rebounder to start with. It is funny, she will have an increase in energy and want to go go go, but this leg muscle pain is persistant.

I have never heard of moxa, hmmmmm. . . . Will look into that! Thanks for suggestion Kali!!

Exercise will probably help a lot. I find yoga is the best for my leg muscle pain. Nothing heroic, just some gentle stretching. I also massage my own legs a lot -- perhaps you could help her with that!

I find epsom salt baths to help a lot with the achy kind of muscle pain. Adding naturally antiinflammatory foods, such as ginger or cherries, might help somewhat too - that's always at least worth a try since it's pretty harmless to add foods to your diet.

I've been doing the second leg of my lyme treatment with Buhner's protocol, and I do have to say that with the herbs I'm feeling much less pain, though I can't say for sure which herbs are doing what - I'm pretty sure cat's claw is anti-inflammatory as well as having a lot of other great benefits for lyme, but off the top of my head I can't remember any others (I'm on a lot of different herbs and supplements right now, and still trying to figure out what's what).

Just as a personal experience - I find yoga to be the best exercise for my specific set of symptoms. I still do a lot of other kinds of exercise when my body will allow it but I really like to suggest it as I've noticed such a great improvement from it even just starting slowly.

I'd also look up "earthing" - I'm really into "alternative" healing, especially lately, but I'm pretty sure this is one of those things that it's easy to roll your eyes at. It's based on the theory that physical contact with the earth (such as walking barefoot) decreases inflammation (pain is usually the result of inflammation). I find it really helpful.

Muscle pain may require magnesium. Best form is Magnesium Malate for muscle pain specifically.

Epsom Salt bath soaks are also excellent - the magnesium is absorbed through the skin into the muscles.

When I had severe nerve pain in my legs, I got more relief from Benadryl than anything else I tried (including narcotics!).

Now, I find my wandering leg pains (my first and most persistant Lyme/coinfection symptom) respond well to Stinging Nettle leaf. I take the powdered dried leaf daily (I do best with a heaping half-teaspoon...Buhner recommends 1200mg/day).

I also find Homeopathic Arnica, Homeopathic Causticum, and Homeopathic Hypericum helpful for various types of pain:

Arnica - for muscle achiness, injuries, bruised sensations.

Causticum - for wandering leg pains, sciatica.

Hypericum - for nerve injuries & pain, better than morphine for nerve pain according to the reference book that I have.

Earthing helped my neighbor who has lupus. It helped me a great deal with my fibro as well. I earth for an hour a day at the park and sleep grounded at night. I had to work up to sleeping grounded. I could only do it for 2-3 hours at a time, otherwise it would trigger a detox reaction. But after 2 weeks of increasing my time on it at night, I now sleep grounded through the night. I wake feeling great. I am alert, energetic and happy. Also did I mention that I actually am now able to sleep through the night. That hasn't happened in 3.5 years. But now, I do it every night. I hope this helps and I hope you are able to improve.
