Goodness, I wish there was a simple answer!
Well, the only disadvantage that I could think of as far as going to Hansa would be one's expectations if that makes any sense. I guess it depends on the mindset of that person. There are a few people who think that because they are going to a clinic that they are going to walk out cured. That is not true at all... It's not like going in for a hip replacement operation and coming out with a new hip!
Dr. J. can and will give a person the "tools" they need to heal but it's up to that person to use those tools once they get home. For example, if that person is not willing to use the suggestions outlined by Dr. J. or whatever is recommended, then in my opinion, they are wasting their money.
The advantage is that Dr. J. has the diagnostics that can pinpoint exactly what's wrong with a person besides the lyme bacteria (it's not always the bacteria itself, i.e.: could be damage the bacteria caused, previous antibiotic use, or one's body is not functioning right in certain areas, etc.).
Last but not least, Dr. J. can not solve one's emotional problems or stress. I personally believe that if one is suffering emotionally that can prevent them from getting better. So either that person wants to deal with their problems and get help or not. That's a choice all people need to make, lyme or no lyme. But that's a topic all by itself.
Mind, body and spirit, yes, they are all connected. If one is out of sync then it affects the rest.
The healing at home protocol is outlined in his book (though Dr. J. invented new botanicals I never took since his original book). Not only did that protocol work for me but for others I know. Obviously the disadvantage is I did not get pinpointed by Dr. J's diagnostic techniques yet I became well anyway.
If someone asked me if I would still go to Hansa, my answer would be yes because I would want to learn more about my body to achieve optimum health (not lyme related). I simply would not trust any holistic practitioner where I live. I keep up with Dr. J's latest news by reading his blogs, etc. He's always researching something new!
Last but not least, Dr. J. trained with Dr. Thomas Rau of the Paracelsus Clinic in Switzerland years ago and if you are interested, there is about a 90 minute video you can watch where Dr. Rau did a lecture at the Marion Institute in MA.
I don't know what else to say.. I hope I helped a little bit.
