Yellow tinted vision and mepron

I'm treating Babesia with Mepron, Azithro, and Artemisinin. After a month, I've noticed a very slight yellowish tint in my vision at times. Very subtle and more noticeable under certain types of lighting (white walls look a bit yellowish peripherally). I have seen in a few places that this could be an uncommon temporary side effect of Mepron (makes sense drinking all that yellow paint).

Has anyone had experience with this and did you have to discontinue the Mepron? I see my LLMD next week and I'll ask what he thinks. The meds seem to be slowly working so I would hate for this reaction to required me to stop. If it is not causing any permanent damage to liver or vision then I could deal with it until the treatment course is completed.

Yes I did have that and I had to stop Mepron twice. I have not been able to stay on it longer than 8 weeks.

My liver enzymes go up even despite aggressive liver support (although this happens both on and off meds for me so it is likely one of the infections and not Mepron itself). Are you keeping track of your liver enzymes? I had to have mine checked every 1-2 weeks and still do.

thanks Summer3. I did have labs taken last week but have not heard results yet - see the doc on Tues but hopefully he would have called me earlier if the results looked off and I needed to stop the meds.

How long after you stopped the Mepron until the vision returned to normal? And what did you take for liver support (I heard milk thistle?). Thanks

In my case, I was getting mildly jaundiced so my vision returned to normal when my liver enzymes went down a few weeks later. I was taking milk thistle, ALA, NAC, liver detox teas, dandelion root, stinging nettle and glutathione IV's in all different combinations.

I don't think it was the Mepron that made my liver enzymes go up. I think it was Erlichia or Bartonella. The second time I took a double dose of Mepron and it actually lowered my liver enzymes for a while. Then they spiked up again. That's been common with me. While I'm on doxy and rifampin they are close to normal. I also feel substantially better when my liver enzymes are elevated and much worse when they are lower and close to normal.

I think the doctor would call you if something was not right. Mine called immediately to tell me to stop meds and was very insistent even though I was not enthusiastic about that plan. They don't usually take risks with the liver.

Summer3, have you been diagnosed with Bartonella? I was wondering as you mentioned the liver abnormalities and I saw in your blog that you have dealt with skin tags, both can be symptoms of Bart, so I was wondering.

Yes, thanks Traveler. I have been diagnosed with Bartonella. I'm on a combo for it now. I had to switch off Babesia (before it was gone IMO) because of my liver.

Even though I'm on another med that's pretty rough on the liver (Rifampin) my liver enzymes went down quite a bit although they are still abnormal.

Soo good to hear that your liver enzymes have gone down some!! Great news! Hopefully they will get back into the normal ranges soon - without causing you to feel even worse.

We often have to stop treatment on one infection even though we haven't rid ourselves of the infection yet, in order to smack down another infection that is causing more troubles. So hang in there!! :-)

Well, my labs came back normal so the liver looks like it is working ok.  Still seeing the yellow tinted vision.  Doc told me to stop the Mepron but switch to the Malarone.  I didnt realize during our meeting but now I see that Malarone contains the same active drug as Mepron - - so I don't understand why switching to this would eliminate the yellow vision (assuming it is a Mepron side effect). 

I will call the dr office, but has anyone had experience with this?  Perhaps I should have the eye doctor take a look as well.
