Antibiotic combo for lyme disease

i just started augmentin(amoxicillin & clavulanic acid) and metronidazole combo for persistent chronic lyme disease. has anyone ever heard of this combo being used and is it effective together? i know amoxicillin has worked for me in the past for lyme alone but my symptoms always came back years later. also ive researched alot on metronidazole and its effectiveness in killing the cystic form of lyme. my doctor now switched me from doxycycline 200 mg 2x per day to augmentin 875mg 2x per day and metronidazole 500mg 3x per day. just wondering if anyone has every used this combo and if it is a good choice of a combination for treating lyme.

I'm not sure about augmentin, but usually amoxicillin is combined with probenecid to increase blood levels. Metronidazole (Flagyl) is a good treatment for cystic Lyme. Your doctor may also consider eventually adding a macrolide antibiotic like zith or biaxin to the combo.

Have you also been evaluated for co-infections? Often co-infections contribute to relapses and a lack of clinical response.

I did not see any progress with amoxicillin whatsoever. The only thing that happened for me was a severe itching allergic type rash and then severe breathing and lung pain. I had to stop for a suspected allergy.

yes i have been evaluated for co-infections and all result have been negative, only the lyme was positive but i was treated with amoxicillin only for lyme in 2007 and after about 6-8 months i was back to my normal self again. but then 2 years later relapsed and was treated with doxycycline and i responded well to that as well and was once again back to my normal self for another 2 1/2 years until october 2011. i was put back on doxycycline and had severe herx reactions with some improvement but was recently switched to the augmentin and metronidazole a week ago.

Treating Lyme is a bit of an art form as well as a science. A good Lyme Literate Doctor will work through a progression of antibiotics to address the different forms of the disease. Almost like rounding them with one abx (or combination), herding them into the corner with another and then finishing off the cyst form with Flagyl. My LLMD has added a further step, adding a biofilm buster to make sure that nothing escapes.

It is so important to be treated thoroughly, or you will continue to have relapses. Are you seeing an LLMD?

And to address your main question, I don't have any experience with augmentin, but have always been given Flagyl with another antibiotic, as Summer mentioned.

yes i am seeing a LLMD. i think the reason he switched me back to amoxicillin is because i had such success treating lyme with it in the past but he believes possibly that the cyst or biofilm form is what caused me to relapse several times and is why he added the metronidazole. after some bad herx's i am feeling quite a bit better on this combination. i know i have a long road ahead but its amazing to me because my hands would constantly tremble and shake so bad 24/7 and i had so much twitchy movements and some partial paralysis that would come and go and all those 3 have gotten better along with alot of other symptoms. i just was curious if anyone had ever had experience with this combination or if anyone has any input on the two drugs being used for lyme. and also what did you doctor use for treating the biofilm form (achievinggrace)?

lyme88-your the first person I've ever seen , besides me, on Augmentin. I'm on augmentin/mino/amanadine cycled w/flagyl, one wk a month for the flagyl, w/iv rocephin, I've only been on this new combo for almost two months and it's really bringing out tons of muscle pain that's the worst ever. Every muscle in my body hurts, like I got im injections into every muscle.

Sad to say, since I went on this combo, I'm the sickest I've ever been, I'm still trying to figure out if it's a good or bad thing. I was previously on ceftin/biaxin.

After 2 yrs 11 months on high dose DIY LIPO C, working hard as a bike courier (lots of sports) and training a bit alongside for triathlons, I am into ivermectin, pyrantel pamoate, fenbedndazole and other over the counter vermicides, on top of juniper berries, turpentine, tumeric (all phenolic ad help break open biofilms...I believe) I am finally for the first time on Dr prescriped antibiotics - 10 days of 500/125mgs of Amoxicillinum/Acidum Clavulanicum after going to the hospital with symptom flair up in my right hand. It is asw if my super charged immune system has finally cornered a bunch of exzema causing biofilm fruitsald in my right arm hand and we are having a mexican standoff battle. This has been going on for months, bt has been getting worse and worse, perhaps due to my provocations. I love it and believe that my purge the crap from the inside out and stop putting symptom suppressing junk on topically deciion in 2013 May was the right way to go.

Welcome skater9! So very sorry you have lyme, but glad you found us.

I only did antibiotics for a little while. It sounds to me like you are having awesome results and I am so very glad.

but an EO put on topically
is breaking up stuff,
causing blisters, and all kinds of
interesting skin issues.
