Electrolyte imbalance and Lyme?

Has anyone ever been completely out of wack where your electrolytes are concerned? Do any of the antibiotics cause this?

Yes I have. Antibiotics can cause it, so can adrenal dysfunction, infections etc. The most common cause is usually dehydration which can occur from any of the above situations as well. If you are having a lot of GI symptoms either from the infections or the meds, it can also create imbalances.

I just got out of the hospital with my potassium and calcium which were critically low! I am so tired of this disease, will it ever get better?

What kind of symptoms do you have?

I'm waiting for results for my electrolyte test.

I'm thirsty much of the time even though I think I'm hydrated.

Other bloodwork was normal. I think this is adrenal. Aware of heartbeat and blood pressure high for me.

Ugh, I had the worst weekend! I was dying of thirst all last week and then by Thursday night my muscles felt like a mess. Anytime I did anything my muscles felt so tired and weak. Then my heart starting fluttering at odd times of the day. I just felt awful. Tired, crampy, weak, shaky, etc. I was on Ceftin for over a year and just recently switched it out for Doxy. I have also been on rifampin since May. My LLMD told me to stop taking the doxy and just to drink electrolytes or water with sea salt in to. I am pretty sure the week before I was herxing pretty seriously. Anyway, I freaked out and went to see my primary care doc and she ran some labs and took a urine sample, and as always, everything is fine, yet I felt horrible. Although, thinking back, the blood tests were run 2 days after I started pounding the gatorade and eating bananas all day, so by the time I got my tests done, I was on my way to feeling better. Now I don't feel as bad, but I do feel like i have a hangover. My head aches and I am exhausted... more exhausted than usual.

This is my 3rd serious relapse of lyme. I already put my time in. I am so done with this garbage!!!

What kind of electrolytes GreenT? The drops you can get in health food stores?

I started juicing 5 days ago, thinking I need greens but so far no difference.

Yes you probably tested ok due to the bananas and gatorade. I'm trying blackstrap molasses since it's high in potassium--take 1 tablespoon.

MD told me to suck on hard candy thinking I had dry mouth, but not so. I have an abundance of saliva. He seemed surprised by that.

It's amazing how desperate thirst can make you feel!

Yeah that was all fine. My LLMD said that he thinks the toxins from the herx messed with my pituitary gland and it did something to the output of an antidiuretic hormone ( sp?). He said to wait until I level back out before starting the doxy again and to start with 100mg per day and work my way back up to 400.

I'm so sorry that this happened, but I'm so glad to know that you are okay. Sounds like you've got a wise doc!! Starting off slowly like that will lessen the chances of setting off another herx.

This is why I stress that herxing isn't okay to have continue on. A body can't heal when it's in crisis mode, and if a herx is happening, then your body is in a healing crisis.

Is it normal to be insanely tired a week after a herx? I'm having a hard time keeping my eyes open this week and the mornings feel like torture. I've also been having these really vivid and intense dreams and its so hard to wake up from them.

Although it could certainly happen, it's not likely that the fatigue that you are feeling a week later is because of the herx. Actually, combined with the vivid dreams like that, chances are pretty good it's a flare of Babesia symptoms.

I had some pretty vivid, horrible nightmares along with my other Babesia symptoms.

Can you ever get your electrolytes back to normal? I hate this disease, I feel like I am at the end! Is this Dr. H in upstate New York worth putting a deposit down for, will someone please respond? Stressed out in Florida.

I have been feeling extremely parched lately, very thirsty, and seems like the more water I drink, the more parched, thirstier I feel. :( I had a cbc done a few months ago and my sodium level was 144 the end of the range is 145...anyway, my dr. had me test my blood sugar level and it was 95 end of the range is 99..if you haven't already maybe check your blood sugar level.

I was hoping someone could elaborate on the subject a little more. I've also experienced what might be electrolyte imbalances but my symptoms usually present themselves as serious light headedness, a feeling of 'floating', a sensation of being 'empty' as if I haven't eaten anything, and feeling jittery or shaky. With all my focus and effort on fighting Lyme disease (and dealt with bartonella and babesia as well) I'm not surprised that an electrolyte imbalance can sneak under the radar, so to speak. I had an episode this morning where I just felt extremely empty and light, and I made myself a drink with Cytomax powder (I don't like Gatorade) and the feelings went away not too long after. I also made an effort to take magnesium pills again, so I'm hoping that helps as well. With all these cross-symptoms of these diseases, it's really hard to tell what's going on underneath it all. I'm not due to see my general doctor until Dec. 1, and not really sure when I'm seeing my LLD again. Right now I am pulsing minocycline and rifampin, and taking a variety of herbals and vitamins daily. Does anyone else experience the symptoms I do, and what other symptoms come along with electrolyte deficiencies?
