How soon does antibiotic make a difference?

I've been struggling for a couple years with my health. finally concluded it may be lyme. I found a Dr. I like who reviewed my negative test result from IGeneX. She said it could look suspicious for lyme so put me on the doxy (100 mg. twice a day) among other things such as diet changes and supplements. If it is lyme, how soon could I be seeing a difference in the way I feel? I've been on 5 weeks and 1 week into it felt worse, then better, then even better than I had for awhile. Now I'm back to feeling about the same with one exception. Up until I saw her I had been having headaches almost daily, and those are gone. I also felt like my neck and shoulder pain was better, but then this week got worse again. Just wondered what other people's experiences have been after starting on the doxy.

Hi Twills,

My doctor told me that doxy isn't strong enough to kill Lyme - it will only stop the bacteria from reproducing. He also said doxy masks symptoms.

Is your doctor an infectious disease doctor?

No, she's a PA who practices in a clinic with a cancer Dr. and also does alternative medicine. I chose her through referral from lady I met at our health food store and had good success with her treating her for lyme.

It really depends how sick you are and how far the disease has gotten into your body. I don't personally believe if you have lyme a couple of years that you will kill lyme with that lowdose of doxy. Think about it, If a bacteria has had a chance to get into every nook and cranny and live there for years, its gonna take a heck of a lot more than that to get it.

Can you ask your PA to increase the dose or switch you to another antibiotic or maybe an herbal protocol?

We can you help you find another LLMD if need be.

Hi Bbrian,

You're on IV doxy, right? I'm sure that's more effective than the orals.

Years ago, when I first was tested and ended up with positive results, my GP at the time put me on 200 mg, twice a day of doxycycline. A couple of months later when I was able to get to see a Lyme doctor, he told me that doxy was not the best choice for a late stage/chronic Lyme patient because it masked symptoms.

I did not feel any better or worse while on doxycycline (except for the stomach issues). Later, I was put on tetracycline but saw no improvement either.

I've had the most success with Biaxin and Plaquenil.
