Minocycline???

Wondering if anyone out there has experience taking Minocycline for lyme?  Saw my dermatologist today for routine yearly exam and he said that I seem to be extra sun sensitive from the doxy.  He suggested asking my lyme doc to switch me from doxy to minocycline b/c it has same effectiveness against lyme but doesn't have the sun sensitivity like doxy.  Wondering what others have experienced taking minocycline.  Is it as effective as doxy?  Any major side effects?  I did see online that there are some risks (i.e. vertigo?) with minocycline, but don't know if that is very common.  Don't want to add to my problems!  If minocycline is more likely to cause serious side effects, I think I'll just stick with doxy.....Just wanting some advice!  Thanks!  :-)

I am taking minocycline with no problems...no side effects.

I've heard good things about it and that it is better for neurolyme when compared to doxy.

Hi Prairie,

I've been on mino for a week. It's a great antibiotic as it crosses the blood-brain barrier. I did experience light headedness for a few days, but it seems to be passing now. It can take a few days for your body to adjust.

I have taken Minocycline in the past for my Lyme but I did develop vertigo. Give it a try though, see how it works for you! You can always go back to Doxy. Good luck! smilewinkgrin

I was on minocycline for a few months & had severe photosensitivity with both my skin & eyes. I would get sunburns through my clothing, car windows, and in very little time. Aside from the photo sensitivity I tolerated it ok; I bought UV protective clothing & polarized uva/uvb sunglasses, but in the spring I started aquatic physical therapy so my llmd switched me over to cefdinir which has been working quite well, although it has been harder on my tummy than the mino. I hope you don't experience this kind of sensitivity when you take it but if so, there are other options like cefdinir. Good luck!

I took Minocycline last year and reacted bad on it: severe nausea and diarrhea - lost about 15lbs in just 2 weeks. Bad herxing too. I started my treatment with this abx (together with Plaquenil and Azythromycin). Had to stop the Mino after 1 month...

I would suggest though to give it a try...

Heather tolerated Mino a lot better than the doxy. I'm sure that the fact that its half-life is about twice as long as the doxy, and that the dosage size was only half of that of the doxy had something to do with it. The mino is also said to be less photo-sensitive than the doxy. We found that to be the case.

I started on it and ramped up to 200mg just recently. I have had no side effects at all, maybe just a little diziness here and there. No sun problems. Now I am just waiting to see if it starts to kill this goddarn bug. But it is probably too early to tell, since I have only been on the full dose for a couple weeks--not even enough to to potentially cover one full growth cycle of the bacteria.

I have been on minocyn for a month now. At first I was so dizzy and couldn't drive at all it was the worst. Spacial issues were bad for me too. Then i backed off on the dosage and it got better, then started it again slowly. Am still a little dizzy but not sure if that is herxing or just the mino or me now. The point is work up to the dosage so your body can get used to it and then you won't have the extreme reactions.
This is really the best drug for the brain so try to work with it so you can see the results!
