Topamax for non-migraine lyme headaches?

A new primary care suggested this. I asked if it's something you have to taper off of since I recently tapered off of klonopin I didn't want to start another one. She said I would have to taper.

I'm going to be seeing her again soon and wondering if I should reconsider.

Seems odd she'd suggest if for a non-migraine headache.

Hi Korissa!!

I was prescribed Topamax for migraine... confused   So was my sister.

She got a lot of help from it, she's no long dealing with the migraine auras and her headache is gone.

I tried it too, but there were too many side effects for me: psychomotor impairment (no fun with that), dizzyness and altering taste.

You can see it can be very different from patient to patient, my sister has been taking it for about a year and thinks it's great, it's really helping her. I had to stop...

I haven't read about dependancy

I was on Topamax earlier this year for migraines, and I had side effects that made me stop taking it. It helped with the headaches and even helped me lose a few pounds that the Depakote had packed on, but the Topamax shredded my kidneys real bad. I never heard of dependency problems with it... just be aware of side pains!

Is this Primary Lyme literate? I think I'd question her about using something that is supposed to be for migraines when you don't have them - unless of course you are having migraines and you are just unaware that's what they are.

This doctor is not an MD, but a doctor of osteopathy.

They can rx meds as well as check for misalignments. This was my first time seeing her with the idea of switching from an MD to a DO for primary care.

I thought that she might be able to tell me if a misalignment might be contributing to my bart headache, although I doubt it.

She's not lyme literate, but she was sympathetic.

My PCP MD has never addressed my headache/palps. I called for help with pain last Christmas and she rx codeine which really doesn't help.

But traveler--I think the houttuynia might be knocking the bart out of me!

My LLMD put me houttuynia as well as a bunch of other things too numerous to mention! But no abx.

I sure hope it works for you as well as it did for me!!! Life without that kind of pain is kinda nice!

Have you tried the Topamax? Did it help with any of your pain?

I finally looked up Topamax, and it's for seizures as well as migraines, so you should give it a try if you haven't yet. It's possible that it could help you! I've read on this forum where a handful of people that are put on anti-seizure meds actually do better.
