Taking Biaxin thought I was suppose to feel better

I'm on my fourth full day of taking Biaxin (1000 mg / day). I actually had a few better hours yesterday, today mostly couch / in bed. More joint and muslce aches, muscle twitching. I was really hoping to have more energy and not feel as bad today. Sinuses just as bad if not worse. I just dont get it. I'm only on this stuff til next Friday. For those who report a metalic taste after taking Biaxin I concur.

Just wanted to know what my expectations should be if I do have Lyme should I expect to feel better on antibiotics in short time frame? Not sure why the sinuses are not at least clearing up??? Thx

I started on 250mg of biaxin and 100mg plaquenil every other day and have worked up to 1000mg and 400mg respectively every day plus 500mg of tetracycline every other and will be bumping the tetra to 1500mg over the next few weeks. Every increase i would feel terrible for a few days and then things level out and then my dosage would increase and repeat. I've been on this since August. you will have good and bad days and yes the metallic taste sucks! You say you're only on it until next Friday? Are they switching abx or telling you that's all of the treatment you need???

They gave it to me for acute sinusitus, not for the lyme since I'm still not officially Dx with lyme. So 10 days to deal with sinus infection.

That's interesting because they did the same for me when they told me i had acute sinusitis which turned out to be caused by lyme. It was like clock work every fall. One year it was mono anther it was allergies another acute sinusitis which they gave me cypro for and then swapped to biaxin because the cypro didn't work and what do you know it went away only to show its ugly face later as lyme.

You are more than likely experiencing a Herxheimer reaction (a <font color="black">released by the death of harmful organisms within the body). It makes you feel like you have the flu, aching muscles and joints, intensified symptoms, etc...

Biaxin is an antibiotic used to treat Lyme. If your acute sinusitis is viral, the antiobiotic will not do anything to solve this problem, the Biaxin will attack the Lyme bacteria though, causing you to herx.

This is how my dr got the ultimate confirmation that I have Lyme: I was taking azythromycine for a respiratory track infection, and after 1 day I felt soooo bad, never felt so bad in my whole life... The antibiotic was causing a herx... My dr was so happy when I told him how I felt, he was right in thinking I had Lyme.

Please keep in mind that this acute sinusitis might be viral, which means that it'll just need time to clear up. Don't let your dr prescribe you steroids though. Steroids are an absolute no when you're having Lyme and/or coinfections, it only suppresses your immune system more.

Lyme treatment is different for everyone, there is no way someone on here can tell you how long it will take for you to get better. I'm sorry...

I'm on Biaxin and Tindamax, 1,000 mg per day of both. I also questioned how long it would take for me to feel any difference, and I have felt worse since I started the meds on Nov 4. I have days where I feel bad, which for the past year has been the norm for me, and then there are days where I just want to curl up and give up. The pain on those days are darn near unbearable.

Hi Roxie,

I had horrific sinusitis but since being treated for Lyme's disease and its co-infections this issue has greatly resolved.  It does tend to slightly flare during my herxes.

I always thought sinusitis was due to bacterial infection so that is why all these years the drs gave me antibotics and sometimes steroids. In all these years I had never heard it could be viral....apparently that goes with the drs handing out antibiotics like candy and then deciding its bacterial if patients get better.....good grief so tired of being lab rat.

this last dr told me most sinus infections are due to mycoplamas.....first i had heard that and it got my attention due to my recent lyme research.

When I first started Biaxin for my treatment, I started herxing on day three and felt horrible for a few weeks, then I started to feel results.  It always gets worse before it gets better, in every change of treatment, for me anyway.  It is tough sometimes to keep in mind that it is a herx, especially when you feel so horrible.  You always wonder if it isn't something else.  That is what I find hard, no black and white answers to anything.  Make sure you are detoxing faithfully especially on those bad days.  It makes a world of difference.  You will feel better!  Hang in there!
