The good test on the fridge is a great idea. So is good stuff in the fridge...
Since you love your carbs perhaps you can start improving your diet by adding healthy produce to your "fix". Try really hard to get 5 servings a day of different colored plants.
Berries are a huge plus. Pizza is a natural for onions, mushrooms, olives, roasted tomatoes, even pineapple. (Yes, I'm Californian.) Add a salad to your day with whatever else if you can. Maybe you can put pecans and blueberries right in the middle of your sammich?
Flax seed, ground up, is easy to sprinkle on most anything. Health food stores will have ground up nuts and seeds and a couple spoons full of any is a good thing. It doesn't take a lot per serving to begin to make a difference. Hemp seed is a powerhouse for magnesium and manganese. (Brain food.)
Some of your crummy health almost certainly is tied to the crummy diet. We have to have all the building blocks to operate right. Our building blocks are vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, things that we could find in our food when we were still wild. (No, not when we were seniors in high school...) White flour really has had most of the good stuff stripped out, then it is BLEACHED, and some good stuff is added back again. It's like the android of the food world. Only sort of food.... Doesn't stop it from being yummy unfortunately.
Rather than trying to give up what you love to eat and go cold turkey (so to speak) just work in extra things that are good. Start with the easiest, and your favorites. I love pre-peeled carrots and bagged salad because they are no fuss, and I'm allergic to carrot peel...duh, what? Berries come frozen year round, an apple even every other day can sure help keep the doc at bay.
I'm on a very small budget so I go for things under a buck a lb. usually, but splurge a bit on berries and cherries. If you buy what's in season it helps keep the price down. Frozen produce goes on sale and I stock up. Healthy eating is way cheaper than the doc and it really will give you a better chance of fighting the destruction going on inside.
Don't forget GARLIC unless you are on blood thinners. Garlic is a natural antibiotic, antifungal, and even antiviral! It'll kill a lot of things, just serve it to those you hang out with too when the chance comes up.
As for docs in denial, is there a virus going around that stops up ears and closes minds while giving distinctly pig-like heads? I think it was sent out spread all over a sample medicine package that came with a promise of Hawaiian vacations for the top prescriber. Kind of like a Mary Kay or Avon sales incentive. "Hey Joe, how can we make sure no doc will admit Lyme is in their county?" "We'll infect them with Swinenoggin Obliviosa. We can tempt them to handle our carrier media with this neato ad gimmick! What product should we push?" "I think they'll all be willing to prescribe for stress induced issues, let's tie it to a sedative!" "Excellent plan. We'll get 'em all!"
No, really, I'm never flippant or sarcastic....
