Hi all. I actually just wanted to know from everyone's experience, what has been the best way to treat neurological Lyme? How did you clear those pesky bacteria out of the brain? I know the obvious answer of IV rocephin, but I'm hoping to hear solutions of using herbs or oral antibiotics. I know neuro Lyme is one of the trickier areas of treatment.

Also does anyone believe the immune system can pass the blood brain barrier? Unfortunately I'm under the impression it can't.

I'd also like to know if there is an alternative to IV antibiotics for treating neurological Lyme.

I have had moderate success with oral Amoxicillin/Biaxin combo for Lyme and oral Rifampin for Bartonella. CNS symptoms were the symptoms that most afflicted me, and although I cannot say that they have completely dissipated, I can say that the level of affliction is far less than what it used to be. Maybe 70% better overall.

I am aware that Amoxicillin does not cross the blood-brain barrier, but for some reason, it did help my CNS symptoms in some way. Amoxicillin did take a few months for me to see results where as Rifampin was within just a few weeks.

Ammox breaks down the cell wall. Here is how it works:

Amoxicillin works by interfering with the ability of bacteria to form cell walls. The cell walls of bacteria are vital for their survival. They keep unwanted substances from entering their cells and stop the contents of their cells from leaking out. Amoxicillin impairs the bonds that hold the bacterial cell wall together. This allows holes to appear in the cell walls and kills the bacteria.

I have read from some Lyme docs that amoxicillin can pass the blood brain barrier if very high doses are used, that is like 6 grams a day.. So far with all my research I am finding the best combo is Cefixime + Probencid. Cefixime also has it's action on the cell wall eventually causing the bugs to lyse and break open. Apparently I have to pull my minocycline treatment though while on this combo as it will prevent the bacteria from building a cell wall.

I would still like to hear from everyone on successfully treating neurological lyme! It's a difficult treatment, I don't think we get good immune system support in the brain.

High dose ammox and Omnicef treated my neuro lyme very well. I pulse doxy at times too. The doxy seems to help the stiff creaky neck.

I had neuro lyme and did not use IV antibiotics. I did ceftin and biaxin as well as a variety of herbs.

Japanese knotweed helped me a lot and it does cross BBB. There is really no immune system in the CNS- you are correct but many herbs are active across the BBB.

I am reading a book ( top 10 lyme disease treatments james schaller)and it says that you don't want to use amx. Because it's a cell wall inhibitor. I get so confused of all the this and that...everything is do or don't then the next day you find out that what you thought you were doing right you were doing wrong. Lyme disease research stinks

Allicin (garlic) does cross the blood brain barrier. The best books I have read are by Stephen Harrod Buhner, who discusses alternative ways of considering our illness and natural ways to combat symptoms. His ways of looking at illness and our relationship to the earth as a whole have given me hope and a positive perspective.

Garlic hey? I like that solution for neurological Lyme. I have bought a bunch of garlic.

So far my own treatment is minocycline, banderol, samento, tinidazole, and Japanese knotweed. In particular if I get any symptoms of dizziness or feelings like the lyme is active in my brain I find taking anyone of these will relieve my symptoms. Actually that is not true of the tinidazole which actually "wakes" it up.

I got the LB Core Protocol in the mail from green dragon botanicals. -andrographis, knotweed, cat's claw, sarsaparilla, and dandelion root. I took a massive dose of that and ended up with a migraine headache.

What do your neurological lyme symptoms feel like? Mine feel floaty, tingly, vibration like at times, and pulsing with my heart beat.

Also obvious things to avoid to not wake it up - sugar I find ! Anything sweet causes activity for me anyways.

Biaxin 1000mg/day and Flagyl at 1500mg/day for cysts worked for my neuro Lyme. After 2 months I stopped the Biaxin and the sympotoms came creeping back. When I started back on the Biaxin I had a herx that was 10x more intense than the herx when I first started on it. Each herx had the same symptoms including, irritability, mania, hypersensitivity to noise, along with increased fatigue and a stiff neck. Flagyl was added a bit later and resulted in a milder herx. Each herx started after 3 Days and was strongest for about two weeks, then very slowly tapered off. Doxycycline, Rifampin, Zithromax had no obvious benefits for me.

Is biaxin bactericidal ? Also does it penetrate through the blood brain barrier well? Seems like it clears out the other tissues well. I heard a good tissue combo is Biaxin + Plaquenil. Really cleans up house. I plan on going Biaxin +Plaquenil to clean me out then I will switch to the neuro lyme plan of Cefixime + Probencid treatment.
