Doxy and Mycoplasma questions

Hello everyone, My optic neuritis has returned making it hard for me to be on the forum as much. I finally started treatment after 8 months. I am on oral Doxy 2 times a day. I also go in twice a week for injections that are supposed to really strengthen my immune system. The doc found Mycoplasma in my blood and supposedly this treatment works for that was well as Lyme. From what I read about Mycoplasma it is also very hard to treat. Apparently it takes several courses of 3 different types of ABX in 6 week cycles. Has anyone else had positive test results for Mycoplasma?   I would really like to go on short term disability but I know it will never happen with a Lyme DX due to the controversy. I am wondering if I’ll have better luck with a CFS diagnosis and treatment for Mycoplasma. I am hoping there is not the same controversy surrounding Mycoplasma that surrounds Lyme.   I can’t tell if I have herxed, or if I’m just getting worse. I’ve only been taking the Doxy since Tuesday. It seems too soon, but from what I undertand of Doxy it doesn’t actually kill anything. I believe it makes it so the bacteria can’t reproduce. I believe the injections that strengthen my immune system are what is doing the heavy lifting so to speak. I’ve just been so tired which is hard because I’m already so weak and tired anyway.   That was a bit of a ramble. My brain is not in top shape as I’m sure everyone can understand. Anything you can tell me about your experience with Doxy or Mycoplasma would be appreciated.

I think mycoplasma is a long standing infection and more easily transmitted than we think. My Lyme literate doctor thinks the majority of people have been exposed to it. He would probably blame your CFS, on the Lyme. He says peoples immune systems slowly deal with mycoplasma anyways.

I think mycoplasma treatment is a long process. Months and months of rifampin and doxycycline. Also Plaquenil could help.
So medications against mycoplasma are doxycycline, Plaquenil, Zithromax, rifampin, and or even the Fluorquinolones.

It is a long process to treat. My doctor realized I was positive after I was reinfected with Lyme. I'm on my 6th month of antibiotics. Due to allergies, I can only take the doxycycline for the mycoplasma which is fine because it works for the Lyme as well. I also go for shots to boost my immune system, and take my vitamins and supplements, and hope for the best. He did say it might take longer than normal to see results being the immune system is dealing with two issues at the same time. I'm still exhibiting symptoms of both the Lyme and mycoplasma although they aren't as severe as they were. Since you are early on in your treatment you probably will not see results for a while. Hang in there!

Thanks Dtav. I figured it was going to be a long haul. I hope I get better before I run out of money to treat.. Those shots are very expensive and I'm not exactly well off. Even a slight improvement would be better than how my life is now. I will try to remember that it will take time. Do you know about how many months into treatment you started to notice a difference? Has the change been slight or big? I'm so tired of being sick. ;-(

I'm sure it's different for everyone, but it took about two months of antibiotics before I saw a slight change in the severity of symptoms. Unfortunately, due to Lyme and some immune system issues, it is slow going for me. Now, after six months of treatment, symptoms are manageable but still present. You may respond faster so don't get discouraged!

Sorry to hear you have to foot the bill for your treatment. Does your insurance not cover it?
