LMFD, I don't know why they happen during Lymes but I can tell you what my doctor (non eye doctor) told me about
how I got my floaters.
There is a gel (vitreous gel) that fills the eye and somehow it has fibers that are attached to the back of the eye (retina). Something makes the gel (loss of collagen?) shrink. As this gel shrinks, it pulls on the retina causing one or more of the fibers to pull from the retina. As it pulls, the spot where the fiber was connected to bleeds and the blood is the floater that I see.
Sometime last summer, I suddenly saw what appeared to be brown fluid floating inside my eye. It looked exactly like when you drop a drop of liquid dye in a glass of water. it was concentrated at first then it slowly dissolved. As it dissolved, I suddenly had a lot of debris in my eye (floaters) and that night I experienced my first flasher, which is an arc of bright light that arcs around the perimeter of your vision. Something caused my retina to tear.
I have visited two Ophthalmologists and neither can tell me how I can stop these floaters from progressing or if they will go away.
