Guys - Rifampin will not cause a herx. I repeat will NOT cause a herx.
Rifampin doesnt kill bacteria and it wont cause an increase in toxin load causing a Herx like traditional antibiotics. Rifampin *does* inhibit bacterial synthesis. Meaning it actually prohibits the replication of the bugs at a RNA level. It other words, it actually stops the bacteria from spreading without killing them and without releasing more toxins. Its fantastically good for this too and synergistic with other antibiotics if you ask me.

Believe me, I am very skeptical of the "herx hysteria" in which every downturn or flare is considered a good sign or herxheimer reaction ...
With that said, when I took rifampin, within 24 hours I had red streaks and lines all over my arms and chest ... I had been taking ceftin and biaxin for 6 weeks prior ( a record for me ), and when I added the rifampin, the lines exploded on my skin ...
Maybe the red lines are a sign of something else - I don't know ... I don't think anyone knows for sure ...
The doc who was prescribing all this took me off after 4 weeks b/c I mentioned the lines and the fact that I didn't feel much improvement - I was also constantly feverish ...... that was my last experience w/ antibiotics, and I wonder - had I stayed on longer, would I have gotten over the hump eventually ( ? )
This study says that rifampin "killed ( malaria ) parasites quickly":
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2043295/I have read that rifampin also has anti-viral properties
www.nature.com/nature/journal/v229/n5284/abs/229422a0.html ( sorry, old study, but I remember seeing others more recent )
I don't think anyone knows for sure, or can tell what is happening when we react to things like rifampin ... It can cause so many reactions, it is impossible to tell what is going on ...
