Enlarged liver and Tinidazole

This is a question coming from a friend:

She has LD and her dr wants to put her on Tinidazole. Now she's worried because they checked her liver and it is enlarged (liver area is also painful, but liver enzymes are ok, drs don't know what caused all of this).

I was never on Tinidazole, so I'm not experienced.

She is worried that T could make the situation worse. What do you think?

I think it's possible.  But this is a question for a Doctor.  If they choose to do it, they might take a before test and after medication is started test to see how the body adjusts, if it gets far worse than you will have your answer. 

I think of all the antibiotics generally used for Lyme, rifampin is one of the worst for elevating liver enzymes.

Tinidazole is somewhere around half as bad as rifampin?

There are lots of antibiotics used in Lyme, to be honest some don't really have any effect at all on liver enzymes.  Some antibiotics are actually pretty harmless except for maybe killing off good bacteria too. 

There are lots of options, she could always start on something like Biaxin and Plaquenil instead.

I am on Tinidazole for the last 2 months and had also taken it in the past. So far, my liver enzymes are OK.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm the friend she's referring to here in the post... I have been very sick for a year now with Lyme. I think i'm having Candida issues and my stool test shows I definitely have Leaky Gut. Never had a problem with my liver until 2 months ago. It came up out of nowhere! I assume it is the Leaky Gut causing toxic overload. Also, there's a possibility of parasites. I've done so many tests and none have actually shown Candida (except bioresonance machine) or Parasites on my labwork. I've done breath tests for SIBO and nothing. I tested positive for Fructose & Histamine intolerances in the past few months. My lyme is currently active and causing lots of symptoms but I stopped most treatment and don't know what to do?! I was on two straight months of Rocephin and never had liver problems. That was 6 months ago. I tested positive for Borrelia, Bartonella, Babesia, Epstein Barr, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, etc.

I'm just so confused. I just started having a very bad head pain near my right temple that feels sharp and painful. Everyone says it's the liver point. Feels like it could be a nerve thing? I feel dizzy, twitchy lost 23 kilos in the year that I've been sick... My Lyme doc thinks we should go on 1 week Tinidazole then full Cowden Protocol with additional herbs.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can:

- Heal Leaky Gut
- Remove Candida/Parasites
- Start a new Lyme treatment

All while having these liver/gallbladder/pancreas issues??

Goodness, you have a lot going on!

It sounds as if you have a very good doctor, I hope you can find a way to put your trust in him/her. That is fundamental to getting better.

I had some trouble with my liver while on treatment, which responded somewhat to milk thistle and then just suddenly resolved itself. I feel it was the Lyme and babesia attacking there, as it seems to migrate from one area to another in my body. I've been on Tindizole for a year with no issues with my liver.

You have so many players involved in your infection, it will be hard, if not impossible to identify what is causing any one problem. And with your gut issues, herbs are probably your best option. Low and slow is the best approach, as my doctor says.

The good thing about the Cowden protocol is that the majority of the tinctures are meant to support detoxing. I think you will find them very helpful. In addition, black walnut is good for addressing parasite issues.

For your leaky gut, you might access one of the other forums on the site that address digestive issues. Those folk know their ---- (Sorry, just had to)!

Well, you have a long, hard path ahead of you, but take heart in that you have identified the problems and can start addressing them now.

Sorry to hear about all your issues! While my liver seems to be ok on paper, I'm not able to process a lot of medicines that I was previously able to, which leads me to believe that my liver needs detox help from this stupid disease. I would guess that you aren't detoxing well and have a sludge of toxins backing up in your liver.

You could take buffered vitamin c. (This from a naturopath on how to do a liver detox). You could take some protein powder every day in a smoothie. There are essential amino acids that might not be getting absorbed that your liver desperately needs to function. I just started taking a protein powder for this.

You can use foods, like a fresh veggie juice. Do you have a juicer? Lots of foods can detox the liver. Spinach, dandelion, carrots, cabbage..stuff like that.

Leaky gut - not sure that I have this but weight loss issues that I'm trying yo get under control. I'm trying to find herbs that bind to toxins and get them out. Not much luck with this yet. ABX can cause leaky gut issues.

I just read your post again. I have massive weight loss too. I have read many theories on why this happens. One is that your body can't absorb the nutrients. Another is that the toxins interfere with some signal in the brain, so you can't regulate the weight. One theory is that it's a brain thing and not a leaky guy per se. This is currently my biggest problem.

The only thing I found on this was finding herb specifically to bind to toxins and get them out. Which is a different strategy than killing the lyme, etc. Like guessing weight loss is from lyme, babesia or mold toxins. Did you check for mold or babesia?

Cholystramine can bind to mold toxins and get them out. I've read cupping can help draw toxins out. Colonics....etc. it's slot of work, but detox is helpful. Are you doing any?

@ acheivinggrace... Yes, I am a bit of a mess! Haha. I'm taking a really good milk thistle supplement called Legalon. Can't tell if it really does anything though? Glad your liver issues got resolved. Wow, a whole year on tindizole! But good to know it didn't cause liver issues. I like your doctor's approach. I think I need "low & slow!" I've already tried Samento & Banderol from Nutramedix but stopped because I wasn't sure if the Samento was causing low blood pressure issues. I definitely want to get some black walnut to try, as I have been told by a few docs that parasites are an issue. Although the last doc who told me that gave me a print out to do MMS enemas!! I chickened out on that though. ;)

@ Louise74... I definitely think detoxing is an issue. Although I feel like I do a lot already. I do detox baths every two days, light exercise (swim, walk, sometimes sauna.) I take good supplements, liposomal vitamin C, probiotics, a good multi, green tea several times a day, lots of good (organic) food. Detox teas - nettle, chammomile, green tea, etc. Eat broccoli, spinach, garlic, etc. I have a good brown rice protein powder from Sun Warrior I bought a few months back then never took it. Maybe I should give it another go?? I also have a simple juicer and a vitamix. I find that the raw juice doesn't seem to settle or digest well right now. It's like I burp and it feels irritated. I was only juicing veggies with a tiny bit of fruit for sweetness. Isn't chlorella a good supplement to bind toxins? The weight loss was lyme related and I stopped drinking alcohol so I guess half the weight was from drinking too much. But even during those times the liver never hurt! I did test positive for babesia 6 months ago and the mold we are testing in the blood now. I did a skin prick test and it showed I had several allergies (trees, grass, pollen, peanuts & hazelnuts.) I do think mold could be an issue and I did a heavy metal test as well. Cholystramine sounds interesting!

@ Mister Mike... I started bone brothes but i'm not so sure about the fermented foods as I suspect I have Candida. Fermented foods are a no-no I heard! I have also read Chris Kresser's website a bit. He's got good advice! As for the head pain. The two natural doctors and acupuncture doctor say that the area on the right are the liver & galle points. Not sure about the left one though? Did you try to see a specialist??

Dawnlouise, you're certainly eating healthy--are you off gluten and dairy too? They are major gut disrupters, particularly gluten.

For something to bind to toxins, you could try bentonite clay. Its not as bad as it sounds, lol!

Hi ksgirl67... Thanks for the tip! I'm trying to be as gluten free as possible. I sometime eat spelt bread if i'm on the go and need to make a sandwich. My doctor tells me spelt is good. I'm in Germany so there not into the whole gluten free thing as much out here but I know what you mean! ;) Gluten causes inflammation. As for dairy, i'm still eating a bit of it... I try to eat goat cheese or yogurt when possible. I use regular healthy yogurt (no sugar) and kefir sometimes, too. I'm running out of things to eat. I feel so limited! Need to get more creative in the kitchen. I love to cook but with this pain, it hurts!

My other lyme doctor who moved away to China at the beginning of the year seems convinced that it's the lyme causing the enlarged liver? Could it be possible it's liver flukes or liver stones/gallstones? I've had all the tests but nothing showed high liver enzymes or any sign of gallstones (even though I was on 2 months IV rocephin!) So strange... If I just knew what it was, I could treat it. I've had so many tests that the doctors are just puzzled. Me, too, at this point!

Oh, and i've tried the clay but I also have gastroparesis (slow stomach emptying) and it doesn't seem to settle well... There's a product here called Toxa-prevent that is volcanic ash in a capsule. It is very good and seems to not bother me as much? Maybe because it's in a capsule form rather than just liquid chalkiness to drink?? I will start taking that again. It's supposed to be effective for detoxing th stool and supporting the liver. Also helps with histamine because it binds to it and removes it!
