Telling everyone I know about Lyme disease

Trying to bring awareness to my city.

Everyone I tell that I have lyme disease, say " Where would you have gotten that?"
People aren't even aware of it and the island I live on is considered an endemic region.

My neighbour, who apparently has fibromyalgia, was talking to my husband - trying to say that I had fibromyalgia...
Well, I saw her today when I was in my back yard, and we had a good conversation. I told her i tested positive for Lyme disease, and she was shocked. We discussed her symptoms...and she is now considering getting tested.
I made sure to tell her that I wasn't trying to convince her that she has Lyme disease...and if she was comfortable with her diagnosis of fibromyalgia, then that's fine. But, she went on to say, that some of her symptoms are troubling her...and have gotten worse in the past couple of years.

My Aunt's husband has been unwell since November, and he's going to get tested, too. He phoned me when my Aunt told him I tested positive for Lyme...and I told him how to get the Igenex Lab test done.
People are either in shock...or they don't even know what Lyme disease is when I tell them.
It's not rare here...people need to know that.

Good for you for telling others about it and having them take you seriously. I tell a lot of people about it here to no avail. It's not widely known here, so most just brush it off.

Nope, I live on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. We are 2 hour (or thereabouts) ferry rides away from Port Angelos and Seattle, Washington.

Garden Peace - Yes, for the most part, people are very receptive. The people I have been telling so far I have known well...and they know I've been ill, and are very interested in what is ailing me.

I'm very lucky in my circle. People have been supportive so far. When we went for my mother-in-law's birthday dinner on Saturday...everyone hugged me...and said they were so happy I have a diagnosis.
Another friend messaged me on fb after I told her and said she has been collecting articles on lyme disease for me. She is a very intelligent lady who I respect very much. So, I'm happy she's in my court. I worked with her for a few years...and she knows the type of person I am - never sick, handled a very stressful job...so she knows I must have something really awful if i can't work.

That's right Girlie, you had mentioned Canada before - I forgot, LOL!!

I have also been trying to raise awareness in my area in NS. I organized a Lyme Support Group and did a presentation today (along with two other women)
to the municipal council. It was well received and they are going to write letters of support to the Minister of Health. In Sept we are presenting to the Dept of Health. Girlie, like you, I have to try to help others and raise awareness.
