Don't have a LLMD. Got prescribed Flagyl for an STD. Need help with Lyme reaction!

Okay a quick background about my Lymes. Late june i slowly started getting flu like (Lyme like) symptoms Headache,chills,loss of appetite,fever,foggy,dizzy. I went to a Minute Clinic and received ten days of Amoxiclin for a possible ear infection.I eventually got my IgM/Western blot test back + for lyme's and went on 3 weeks of Doxy ( this was abount a month after trying to figure out what it was) my symptoms were relived expect for brain fog, and just feeling out of it, but it was bearable.

3 days ago i was prescribed Metrondizole(Flagyl) 500mg 3 times a day every 8 hours, for a series of STD's (Trichomonis,Atopobium Vaginae, and Gardnerlla Vaginalis) however, im gay, and never have slept with a women in my life which to my knowledge is the only was to acquire trich. The the other two are bacteria that my doctor thinks its from my pH balance being off, and possible yeast.

My question
Last night a sore throat started coming on and then went away in the morning. Today its a full blown sore throat, i have back aches, chills, sleep disturbance, and fatigue, and foggyness like hell. My doctor isn't aware that Flagyl can herx the crap out of Lyme patients, and im resorting to yall for help. Is this a normal herx, or a allergic reaction. What should I do?

Should Flagyl be combined with any other treatment? im aware it kills the Cyst form, but once the cyst is broken how is the bacteria killed off?


Oh im also Gluten/Sugar free(for lymes). Don't know if you need to know that.

So sorry you're feeling so awful...but glad you found this forum. It is a great place for support and answers to your questions.

Regarding whether Flagyl can cause a herx or not? I'm not sure, but I'm thinking that if the Flagyl bust open the cysts, then you may have more active lyme spirochetes in your system, causing the symptoms.

Regarding whether Lyme disease is contagious. There is some information out there that it could possibly be sexually transmitted.

Yes, Flagyl should be combined with another antibiotic.

What you need to do is find a Lyme Literate Dr. to assess you and treat you for lyme disease. No other Dr. will do - he/she must be lyme literate.
If you need help finding one, start a new post with the subject: "Looking for LLMD in/near_________" (insert your city/state)

Are you sure flagyl is paired with another abx? I read that it's taken alone at the end of treatment. If I keep taking this cyst buster without anything else will The "herx" go away?

I can't say for sure, as I'm not a Dr...but combination therapy (2 or 3 antibiotics at same time) is very common in treating lyme. It seems to be what most LL Dr's are now prescribing (combination treatment).

You may be correct that some Dr's will prescribe Flagyl at the end of treatment alone - there are many approaches to treating lyme.
It is best that you consult a Lyme literate Dr. to help you...and treat you appropriately.

The sooner you are treated for the lyme disease, the sooner you will heal. Treatment is usually continued for weeks after symptoms have resolved.

I took Flagyl alone for C-diff. It helped so much with my Lyme symptoms that I am on it everyday, along with cefdinir and azithromycin.

If you will change your setting to allow me to email you, I'll send you the name of my LLMD. She's in Chapel Hill. I'm not aware of any in Charlotte. NC is not a good state to be an LLMD, so they're aren't many.

Did you take it alone for C-Diff? Im worried that if i continue Flagyl without another abx killing the bacteria that I will worsen.

Im planning on taking Garden of life: Antifungal after this for possible yeast overgrowth due to so many abx. Maybe take Oil of Oregano for two weeks after Flagyl to kill bacteria, and yeast?

Yes, I took it alone.

Dr. Eva Sapi published a paper showing the metronidazole has activity against the spirochete form too.

500mg twice daily. I'm still on it, but now I've added two other antibiotics.

I can manage 500mg. Twice a day. My doc has me on 500mg 3 times a day which is brutal. My Lyme nodes are swollen up, and I have a sore throat. Is that normal? I'm also getting flu like symptoms from the meds pretty much. Fatigue,headache,muscle aches,sore neck
