dental plaque from antibiotics?

Does anyone know if either/both doxy and/or amoxicillin (or I guess any antibiotic) can increase one's susceptibility to developing dental plaque?

I've always brushed at least twice/day and flossed once/day...I never "feel" the need for my biannual dental cleanings (but always get them).

I had a cleaning in June of this year....and have been taking either doxy or amox since July. I started to "feel" like I need a dental cleaning and was horrified to discover staining/plaque between my teeth....so much so that I look like someone who smokes two packs/day and drinks a ton of coffee :)

I asked my LLMD about it yesterday and he asked if I'd changed my diet. Um, yeah, I went low-glycemic which should have the opposite effect lol

I see the dentist today but was curious if anyone else has had this issue....and if there is anything I can do to correct it.

I have cleanings every 3 to 4 months, and yes, depending on ABX protocol, plaque build-up and staining can increase.

Definitely happened to me as well. My teeth were turning yellow, and terribly stained on the front teeth, esspecially where the teeth that get the most saliva are. What happens is the medications come out of the saliva. The bacteria that are still there are forced to make plaque as much as they can because if they don't they will die. Also some of the medications themselves can "stain".

But I have some really good news. I went for a teeth cleaning yesterday and my teeth literally look like brand new. And I had some
BAD staining on them. So instead of cleaning every 6-9 months you might want to go more often. It was the polishing that removed all the yellow stuff. The hygenist thought I drank lots of coffee or black tea lol. But I have a secret... I'm on multiple antibiotics for lyme disease treatment.

Well I don't want to tell the hygenist... I'm not sure she will want to clean my teeth after i tell her that. She was wearing a mask and gloves so I don't think she would get my germs though.

I think there maybe some Borrelia germs too in the mouth. So gotta clean that.

This is a relief to me as well. Heck, if a bunch of us got together shortly before our cleanings, do you think other Lymies could pick us out? lol

I was wondering if the bacteria might come out through our saliva and make matters worse....

I had my cleaning today as well, LP and I feel like I'm ready for a toothpaste commercial :)

The hygenist suggested I take a good, hard look at my teeth in 6 wks. and suggested me coming in for a prophy jet if I see any stains whatsoever....she said prompt removal of stains will prevent the development of tartar. Plus, it's half the price of a cleaning and will obviously take less time.

I couldn't believe how long I was in the chair today.
