My husband was diagnosed with Lyme in summer of 2013. We think we caught it 7 weeks after bite. He was put on IV ceftriaxone for 18 days but had a severe allergic/ toxic reaction. Family history of allergy. He was then put on 21 days of amox. And responded quickly. He relapsed in March 2014 and was once again put on amox. Showed improvement and felt great in June and July. He has gone downhill since august. We have an LLMD out of state and he just switched him to biaxin 2 weeks ago. He has been feeling worse the past 2 weeks. Headache, stiff neck and very sore elbows!! He did test positive for mycoplasma and we just sent out additional bloodwork to IGenex for PCR, bartonella. Does anyone have an insight? Herx? Or meds just not working, or more time is needed??? Any insight will be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

Hi Rebeckk24 - I started antibiotics (oral) in July of this year...doxy, and then added zithro...
Went on ammox in august, and added biaxin in September. I have had my most severed herxes since the biaxin has been added. To get relief, I am stopping my antibiotics for a couple days, and the herxing subsides, then go back on. So, this last time I was on the biaxin for 5 days, then off for 2, and I am back on today...hoping I will last longer than 5 days this next round.
So, it definitely could be herxing. The biaxin seems to be really strong...and others have also mentioned this.
See what happens in the next week or so. Is your husband detoxing? That helps with the herxing - the epsom salt baths, and drinking lemon water are my two favorites.
He could stop the biaxin for a day or two...and if symptoms resolve somewhat...then it's most likely a herx.
Maybe a call to his LLMD is in order?

Hi girlie! (Like the name) thank you for the reponse! He is not detoxing but I'm going to suggest it! We go back to LLMD on the 11th so I'm hoping for some insight. What kind of herx reactions are u having?

I drink filtered water (brita filter) - 6 to 8 glasses per day...and I buy organic lemons and for half of the glasses of water, I squeeze in lemon - I don't measure the lemon.
Well my herxes usually involve nervous system and pain.
I definitely have nervous system involvement...so when I herx, my nerve pain ramps up (mainly left shoulder blade, left arm, hand, index finger)...and I also get chills really bad. And my sleep issues which have mostly resolved...when I herx...I don't sleep as well, and wake up in the middle of the night with anxiety.
The vibrations in my body are always worse when I herx.
And, I usually cry. I have a feeling of doom and gloom when I herx.

Rebeck your husband should/could feel worse before better, I think it took me 3-4 months to start feeling better. No might have had a few hours here and there but now after 11 months I feel about
85-90% better.
Girlie my doctor only has me on ANX 5 days then off 2 then back on 5 then off 2, I do this for 3 weeks then I'm off for a week and 2 days. This has worked for me since I am feeling almost normal, if I can even remember what normal was for me plus now I'm 53, not that that is old but not like im 20. I believe you will start having more better days soon.

Have you thought of using Rocephin in an IV?
Squeeze a whole lemon into a glass of water, and add a tsp. of baking soda. Don't stir or drink until it stops fizzing!
Order some powdered zeolite, and have him take it by mouth, and use it in the bath too.
You can also use bentonite clay in the bath.
He needs to stay on abx for at least six months.

Teragram, rocephin is cefrtriaxone but thanks for the suggestions. He has been on antibiotics again since April. 1500 of amox. From ID doctor and doxy. Then 2000 amox. From LLMD until July. Then 4000 amox. Until 2 weeks ago. He is now on biaxin. So a total of 7 months. Was doing great in June and July, got worse in august after he stared the amox @ 4000 in august. So no improve mtb since august! This is really scaring me!!!!! I love my husband so much and this is tearing me apart to see home like this! I want to see him get better and I'm losing hope

Do not lose hope. It's a long hard battle but he can get better again. With your help he surely will.
Try to get him to do as many detoxing methods as possible as others have said. I cannot stress this enough! It's crucial to feeling better.

Thank you so much summersun!! We live in Ny and a lot of people here do not understand it! I'm going to encourage him to detox! It helps to hear from others who know what we are going through! ❤️

Hi Rebekk!
Welcome to our community!
If you haven't yet, please read through our "New to Lyme? Start here!" thread that sits at the top of the forum. It's packed with helpful information, symptom lists, detoxing suggestions, and so much more.
There are a lot of LLMD's in NY - is there a reason why you are choosing to travel out of state?
I completely agree with Summersun and what was said about
detoxing being vital to our healing. As the bacteria die, they leave behind toxins that drive our symptoms. Many of us also have gene mutations that prevent us from detoxing well, so if hubby starts detoxing a lot daily, and still isn't feeling much relief, then it's time to get him tested for the MTHFR and other gene mutations that will interfere.
Hang in there! He will get well when the right combo of things is found to help his body recover.

Thanks traveler! I'm new to this blog stuff! We go to PA because the dr is only 2 1/2 hours away and NY doctors are on Albany, NYC or upstate area which are a lot farther. We have also had locals here recommend our LLMD. I actually have both the MTHFR mutations and am quite familiar with it.
My husband had 110 vilas of blood taken in a 4 month period where our ID doctor here was looking for other complications on top of the Lyme. Nothing came up, we were actually quite lucky with how much he did. From what I have read regarding ID doctors and Lyme. But I am going to mention the mutations to the LLMD on next visit on the 11th. I'm so appreciative of everyone's reponse! My husband and my family are my life!!! I would do anything for him and I know he would the same for me!!!!

I'm glad that you like the LLMD that you go to!! If you should ever wish to change, then just send me an email and I can share some options with you that are likely closer to where you live.
I understand - I'm the same way with my hubby and family!! Many of us here are. Family is what keeps us going much of the time.
Do what you can to get your hubby to detox daily using as many different methods as possible.
