All of a sudden, Doxy makes me sick to my stomach

I was on Doxy/azith/Mepron in the spring and my Doc switched me over to other 3 other abx ABX in the peak of summer because of the risk of sun burn and my history of skin cancer ( he wanted to switch things up anyway but this was a good time considering). I had no problems whatsoever taking the Doxy, azith, Mepron combo at that time. I've always had a very strong stomach and at times, when I would forget to pack food when traveling, I was able to take these without eating.

1-1/2 months ago I was put back on Doxy. The first month, I of course had herx hell, but I could tell it was working. Even had the first few days I've had in as long as I can remember that my first thought when waking up and last thought when going to be wasn't centered around misery. I haven't left the restroom with the faucet running or put the milk in the cabinet and cereal in the fridge or tried to make a cup of tea in the keurig with the honey jar where the mug should have gone in quite a while. I wasn't 100% fatigued all the time. It has been a breath of fresh air and I finally feel like I'm making a little progress.

All of a sudden, two weeks ago, I cannot take my Doxy. I either vomit, or feel like I'm going to vomit all day. I eat with my pills. I've tried eating half a meal, taking pills, then finishing my meal to be sure that there was plenty of food in there with it. My doc had me space out the 200mg twice a day to 100mg 4 times and still.....the same thing.

I've tried chamomile tea, ginger, peppermint to try to help. Any other suggestions? I really don;t want to go back off Doxy and I know thats what my Doc is going to do if I call again. After 8 months of ABX I do not want to take two steps backwards after finally taking one forward. It's just not an option :(

Sorry to hear of your issues but VERY happy to hear of your progress!

Doxy didn't bother me the first time I took it (only 3 wks.) and I'm now on it again for almost 4 wks.

I've found that it sometimes makes me nauseous....and I think it's related to times I didn't drink enough water when taking it.

Now, I make sure to chug down at LEAST 4 oz. of water before I pop the pill and another 4 oz. afterwards.

If I feel any nausea coming on, I eat a bunch of nuts.

Thanks utahgal. IV isn't really an option with this LLMD and/or my insurance. Even if it was part of this Dr's protocol, coverage would be minimal if at all and after 8+ months of treatment where coverage has been minimal if at all on everything, we are almost down to counting pennies for gas lol. God continues to give us what we need so onward we trudge.

Thanks CD. I drink a ton all the time, but maybe I'll try giving it a push right before I take my meds and see if it helps. Maybe diluting it more is the key. Worth a shot! Thanks

Traveler, your definitely correct. I just dont want to give back any of the ground I've won this last month and a half. I feel like I've fought WWIII to get here and I'm afraid going back on the other combo is gonna lead to that. It just doesn't seem to have the same effect. You are definitely spot on though and as always and I appreciate you sharing your wisdom here.

Hi Kent, I do take a hefty dose of probiotics. Right now, I actually look forward to pulling them out of the fridge and eating them because they are sweet (kinda like my sugar free gluten free candy lol) and they dont turn my stomach. Of the top of my head, I couldn't tell ya the dosage, but it's up there.

I think maybe I'll try switching over to all really easy to digest food for the week, push a lot of liquids when I take my meds, and push on just to see if there is any change. If there isn't, I guess I'll yell uncle and give the LLMD a call on Friday to see whats next.

I had the same reaction to Doxy. I took it for about a month with no problems.Then out the the blue, I began to feel very nauseous. The nausea began to be constant. Then I began to vomit. It got so bad that just looking at food or my meds made me vomit. The intense nausea was unbearable. I was vomiting so often, that I felt I was damaging my esophagus. So I stopped. I'm on amox. now. Feel so much better not being severely nauseous all day.

Listen to your body.

I was on 400mg of doxy for about 6 months. I guess I have an iron stomach because for most days it never bothered me. There were some days when I got nauseous and even some that I threw-up. I think these were days when I didn't drink at least 12oz of water when I took the doxy.

I was unable to take doxy so I just took another antibiotic. Just because you can't tolerate it doesn't mean you can't take a different kind.

I've been switched a few times now. Doxy just seems to be the one that gives the greatest progress. On my other switches, I just didnt see the results I get when on Doxy.

I wrestled with this, They are all organic and have about 2.5G of sugar in each candy. I only need two a day right now so I figure that the 5 G of sugar is the lesser of the two evils if it allows me to take keep my meds down. Hopefully my gut gets back to normal and I can get back off the sugar :P
